I recently finished watching the series 'Popotan'. For an anime that was based on an adult PC game, I was pleasantly surprised by it. Initially, I was rather put off by the amount of ecchi (after all, it had to remain faithful to its H roots) but decided to continue with the series and give it a fair chance. It boasted a well plotted storyline, brilliant composition, gorgeous animation and a satisfying conclusion. It was unpredictable, heartwarming and emotionally-driven. There was comedy, drama, and lots of fanservice (for those who do love it). I was pleasantly surprised indeed.
I know that there are quite a few series that are based on adult PC games. Da Capo, Comic Party, Kimi ga Nozomu Eien, just to name a few.
What do the lovely folks at ANN think about such titles ? Do you usually shy away from it ? Or do you grant it an objective viewing ? Are there some that turned out to be pleasant surprises as well ? Or were there any that were inexplicably atrocious ?

While I can't speak for the head honchos of ANN, I can inject my own opinions here. From what I've seen, ANN gives everything an equally objective chance without any preconceived notions. As for me, most video game to anime adaptations are miserable, at best. I can't comment on "adult video games," since I'm not one and don't play them.

Well, the only games I've played close to those games would be Princess Maker, Love Hina, and one of the Sakura Wars, and those weren't adult. I think the anime can turn out very good if it's got a decent story and characters. I think the best example of this would be last season's Tsukihime. I'll watch it if the story sounds appealing.

Well, I would definitely give it a chance if I was old enough to buy it. Im only 15. If my parents caught me with hentai I'd be dead X_X.

Same deal here. Not that I don't mind not being able to watch hentai.

I should note that most of these anime series that are being adapted from adult bishoujo games aren't hentai themselves. Shingetsutan Tsukihime, for example, has only had about two rather brief scenes to my memory that would be considered risqué, though nothing that could be considered hentai in the least.

So are you saying that there are sex scens but they don't really show anything?

I haven't played all the way through Tsukihime, but it's probably just not very graphic... in otherwords, there may be some nudity, but it's a very tiny portion of the whole.
Probably much like Kanon...

Exactly. The only scenes that come to my mind that had any actual nudity or sexual overtones were a non-sexual onsen scene with Satsuki & Arcueid, Akiha feeding on Kohaku's blood by biting at her breast, and Shiki & Arcueid laying in bed after sex, which itself had no nudity at all.
Three instances, none of them explicit, all of them brief.

I want to play Tsukihime. Is there anyway for me to get an English version, or heck, a translation to the game? *willing to order the game*

I believe that someone should license these games for US release as I am highly curios myself (but I'm still 17 ).

It's highly unlikely. There just isn't even that great a following among fans, much less the U.S. market. I'd be willing to say that more than 99% of all the adult PC games released in Japan never will see a license here in the U.S. In Japan, there are typically between 40-50 games released a month, and from what I can tell, on average, we get about 7-8 games released in a year from those who have licensed them.
Considering the amount of text to deal with, I'd say it's significantly more difficult to get a game translated than it is to do a fansub of a show.
In all honesty, it would be better to just learn Japanese fluently and then play it that way.
