Have you ever taken a chance on an anime which you weren't too sure you were going to like and ended up really enjoying it? Examples:
Kaliedo Star: The basic concept behind this series, a girl travels to the US to become a circus star, intially sounded boring to me. However, I found Sora to be extremely likable and easy to cheer for. I found myself really wanting to see her succeed and kept watching to see if she would. Also, the animation during the Kaliedo Stage performances was very impressive.
Diamond Daydreams: At first I thought that this might be alittle to soap-opera like for my taste, but I ended up really enjoying the series. The characters were easy to relate to and I found the easy pace of the series to be a refreshing change. Also, although the series structure was a bit different; devoting only two episodes to each character's story, I thought it worked well.
Your thoughts?

Yeah, i actually have done that with alot of anime. Well since i'm mostly really busy on weekdays, and most anime started coming out on weekdays, so i decided to skip alot of anime's i thought weren't good.
Tengen Toppa Gurren Laggan - Is practically the anime that i felt guilty for not watching, i was redempted with the task of re-finding it afterwards... xD Really great even on the first episode, so maybe people need to start viewing some animes before they start to put their perceptions into what they think it is.
I skipped alot more animes that i was going to watch, i can't list em all, but Tengen Toppa is an anime that i feel guilty for not watching in the first place... xD[/spoiler]

Fafner, I approached this series because I was curious to see just how much of an Eva rip-off it would turn out to be. And while I did spend the first episodes more or less rolling my eyes at the Eva vibes the show, Fafner eventually acquired a solid personality that set it apart and I ended up truly enjoying it. The character interaction was very different from Eva as was the ending. To me Fafner did not top Eva but I really enjoyed its characters and how believable their reactions and it remains something of a favourite of mine that is both action driven and very moving.
Air I thought this would be a sheer moe fest of the extremely sugary kind and was rather unsure about it. The first episodes confirmed by suspicions and I was not overly fond of the character design either. However, as the story progressed and developed I became extremely attached to it. Each arc was more interesting and emotional than the previous and by the time it reached Misuzu's arc I was already hooked. While I admit that everything surrounding Misuzu was written to more or less force the viewer into empathy it worked for me. It made me cry and the goal scene will forever be engraved in my memory
Revolutionary Girl Utena I was in two minds about this one, I expected something Sailor Moon-like that was highly pretentious at the same time. The first episodes left me mostly indifferent but once character development kicks in Utena becomes one of the most complex series I have ever seen. It also becomes extremely dark and dangerous in a way that is both subtle and subtle.

Whenever this topic comes up, I feel obliged to mention my relationship with Shaman King. When I first heard about it, I dismissed it as being some crappy Yu-Gi-Oh! clone or something. However, after coincidentally being in the room while my brother watched the first five episodes, I got totally hooked. Four years later, it's still my favorite anime of all time; even moreso now that I've watched the infinitely superior original Japanese version.
Another series I didn't think I was going to like was NANA. I'm not a big shoujo/slice of life person, and I only started watching it because Paku Romi voiced one of the lead characters. However, after only the first few episodes, I found the story and characters completely captivating, and NANA is still one of my favorites.

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya:
Before I saw this, I mainly watched TV anime, such as Inuyasha (haven't seen it for some years, however), so my standards were not high at all. Needless to say, this blew me away. I never knew anime could be so good.
Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu!:
This has remained for me the funniest form of video media I have ever seen. I definitely was not expecting this level of humor, and I fervently wish for more season of FMP.

I'm sooo glad I decided to continue, and I take back all my bad comments about NHK. I am really really liking it, and I hope things work out between Satou and Misaki . The paranoia humor is quite funny, and the romance poignant and sweet, while also being realistic about 1.) guys (and their porn) and 2.) super-otakuism.
I'm happy I stuck with this one!

Since I read some forum about how FMA sucked, I almost completely ignore other peoples opinion if a series until I view it myself.
Air I was looking for a new volume and since it wasn't there I grabbed the most interesthing and uknown series I could find. All I knew about it was that it was came from Kioto A. and ADV. In the first episode I fell into the story and can't wait for the second volume.
Same goes for The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumia , Beck wich I adore. I knew very little of the series and on purpose. It can't be healthy to put standards on an anime you have yet to purchase.

The very first episode broadcasted was made for this very effect. It looked crappy -- and -- it amplified the "better than expected" feeling.

I actually liked the Tekken anime considering how it has one of the worst average ratings in the ANN encyclopedia. Considering it's an OVA I was impressed with how they fit the story that they had in with the characters and such, as well as I think they had a good selection of VAs for the movie.

Cardcaptor Sakura: The independent rental place I used to go to recommended this when I ran out of Trigun, Cowboy Bebop and Rurouni Kenshin, and then asked for Pokemon subbed (since it looked cute, but I couldn't stand watching the dub). I just gave her a look when she recommended CCS, and said, "I've seen some of that on tv and I wasn't impressed..." and she said, "NO. Not that garbage. This is the uncut sub." It looked really kiddish and super super girlie, but I rented volume one anyway... and then rented the all they had, and then bought everything that they didn't have. I loved it, even though some of the filler eps were just ridiculous and unnecessary, and the manga (which I later bought and read) was better and more condensed.
RahXephon: When I ran out of anime (again), I went to an anime forum and asked for recommendations, and several people recommended RahXephon. I told them that I hated mecha. They said it didn't matter. So with great suspicion, I bought volume 1 & 2 used... and had a CRAZY marathon session with discs 3-7 when they came in and I was home sick. This is one of my favorite series ever, and possibly THE favorite series.

For me it was Princess Tutu. I don't like to take changes where money are envolved, but i'd heard positive things. I bought the whole series at once for $60.
I saw the first episode and I remember groaning because it seemed so cute. And then angst knocked on the door, in the form of dark covered skies and anguish.
it's one of the few anime i've watched twice trhough in the same year. Needless to say, its one of my top ten anime now.

This topic has generated interest faster than any other one I've started so far! Anyway, another series came to mind: Madlax. I went into it kind of expecting a Noir rip-off, but wound up being impressed. Not that I didn't like Noir, but I thought Madlax had enough of it's own direction to avoid being a cheap copy of Noir.

Gundam Seed At first I just wanted to check whether all Gundams suck as much as Gundam Wing but it turned out to be enjoyable.
Higurashi no Naku Koroni When I run my eye over the pictures it seemed to be harem anime with moe characters and I weren't interested. However I read that the characters are psychopathic so I decided to give it a try. And I was really surprised by the very first minutes and the end of the first episode. It showed Higurashi won't be a typical harem anime.

Kanon '06 - The first things I saw with this was the original Kanon, looking at first glance it will be not so much similar for the first one but its animation, also it's a game adaptation so I didn't care less. I didn't thought the story too would have a much impact, I hate re-makes but this is a good one. Much more than a masterpiece that caught my heart. I keep re-watching this series.
Myself; Yourself - I shouldn't have judge it by first look. And also, compared on Kanon '06, I thought it was mediocre at best when I watched this series. I didn't thought that this would very good. Fooled by the title. In fact, it's the animation made me thought that this was only a boring romance series, and what I have sought it has its Climax which turned my thoughts br thrown away.

Oddly enough, I'm looking at Myself; Yourself myself. Just stared though, so I haven't seen enough yet to make any real judgement on it.
