Why is Gundam 00 not getting a Blu-Ray release? It's kind of pathetic that rips of the HD airing are online, but there is no legal HD version. Why would I want to buy inferior quality DVD's? And they wonder why anime disc sales are so abysmal?

it's because anime sales are so abysmal that they won't risk a blu ray release
and they never said there definitely won't be blu rays in the future.
support what we do get and they might bring the Blu rays.

With how heavily those "HD" rips are compressed, it's not like there's a night and day difference on what the relative quality of DVD generally is.

Um yeah there is. On my 1024 x 768 computer monitor they look great. A DVD doesn't look so good because DVD is only 640 x 480. The HD has really clean lines and I can't tell that I'm watching computer rips. DVD's on the other hand look somewhat blurred. Plus, I plan on getting an HDTV soon and I'd actually like to have things running on it that look good.
I'd rather play a waiting game with Bandai and hope they'll come to their senses and do a Blu-Ray release than to throw $150 down the drain on inferiority. It makes me really sad that they seem to be doing the same thing for Code Geass. I absolutely love Code Geass, and I want to buy it, but if the Japanese get Blu-Ray I want it too. Otherwise, I feel like I'm just getting shafted.

The difference is still pretty high in many cases. When compressing from source material of significantly higher quality (which has less grain/etc.) it helps a great deal with the end result (it's easier on the encoder). A lot of poorer quality dvds encode bigger and look worse than the ones that are done well, so the jump to HD means about the same.

Probably so, and blu ray is still niche so it'd be a double problem. In a few years I think we'll see a lot of things re-released as blu ray.

I think the person complaining pretty much answered his own question. Blu-Ray still isn't heavily adopted in the US, it's expensive to produce, expensive to buy the discs and equipment for, and is still a niche market. Anime itself is also a niche market that's in the midst of a downward trend. Take a niche product and try to release it on an expensive niche platform and you're just asking for trouble. Then add to that the fact, as was stated, the rips are available everywhere online and the piracy element simply puts the final nail in the coffin.

Maybe I should start a write-in campaign or something. Although no one else seems to be lamenting the lack of Blu-Ray here except me so who knows if anyone would participate.

I think blu-ray sounds cool, but I'm not lamenting it because it's not open media. DVD wasn't either, but thanks to decss/dvdcss it really is open now. I won't use what I can't backup without drm/etc. Once blu-ray is thoroughly cracked (where I can play the videos in my OS of choice aka Linux) and doesn't require any proprietary software solutions (anydvd), I'll be less opposed to it.

I understand how you feel but I doubt a write in campaign would work very well in this case or at this point, However you might have more success with such a campaign for TTGL and/or Code Geass and if you wait for blu ray to become more mainstream
