Um... slight nit-picking here, but from the pictures shown in the article, isn't Shinigami shown on the left side, and Astral Project on the right? Just figured I ought to point this out. Thanks for the info!

Cool! I watched the anime of Ballad of a SHinigami and it wasn't bad. I'd like to get a hold of the novels and maybe the manga for it. Also, the Classical Medley and Fire Investigtor Nanase sound interesting just from what is stated in the article.

Oh how disgusting. What a shame this awful company with like or even worse ethics than Viz, had to pick up some new manga.
*throws up*
On the flip-side. I heard their latest manga hasn't been censored, so that's good. Now just let Del Rey release Tenjho Tenge and redo all your hack-job manga and I'll let it be, CMX.

How is CMX worse than Viz? CMX edited one title. Viz has edited dozens, almost at random and sometimes when the exact same thing was unedited in earlier volumes (case in point: Flame of Recca).

I think it's in a way how CMX reacted to the accusations and venom from the fans. Outright implying in a press release that "We're smarter than you, so piss off!!" is not the best way to diffuse a situation, especially when it comes to Censorship and Culture Clash.
Viz played it smart and pretty much didn't reply to the venom. Plus the edits they made were extremely broad thru multiple titles.

I'm not familiar with CMX's titles, but I can say that VIZ truly is horrendous. Cases in point: Fullmetal Alchemist, where they switched name spellings and edited references to Christianity; and D.Gray-man, where they misspelled names like nobody's business. And I'm not talked about the Linali/Lenalee battle. They spelled Komui's name 'Kamui' in volume 8, for crying out loud. Their editors obviously suck(ed) and I hope they get/got fired for that mistake.
Back on topic... I liked the Ballad of a Shinigami light novels, but judging by ANN's pic in the article, the manga's art style looks too girly for a serious series. The light novel's art style was reminiscent of Kino no Tabi's, and I thought that was a good fit. But covers can be deceiving, right?

Well, Viz doesn't really respond to fans much at all, which isn't any better than what CMX did. Viz basically says "talk to the hand" and continues to talk about their new upcoming releases or something. I vaguely recall CMX's response which I don't recall being quite like how you characterize it. They had decided to edit it and were not going to change their minds, so I don't think there was anything better they could have said and there were surely worse they could have done (like ignoring it, Viz's preferred method).

CMX is particularly awful, because they edit a mature title which only appeals to readers of mature manga, but they still sell it as a Mature title. Thus you get the false impression that it's not unedited, when the situation is clearly the opposite.

I agree that VIZ's lack of speak is also hurtful, but compared to CMX's resposne to the whole TenTen controversy, Viz saw an unexpected benefit in just keeping mum. Why give the haters more ammunition than what you gave them already?

Tenjho Tenge was not shrink-wrapped and never had a rating higher than T or T+ (can't remember which) -- they didn't change that practice until recently. Whether they still (heavily) edit the series, I don't know.
While I think a lot of the "WHOA IT'S VIZ OMG" people can be nuts with valuing principle over practicality, it's pretty damn stupid to hold an eternal grudge for a company like CMX for mishandling ONE FANSERVICE TITLE.

The Shinigami manga is really nothing like either the light novels or the anime. The art is done by a totally different artist and the result is a book that is very, very shoujo. I'm not saying it's good or bad...it's just really different.

Hellkorn: I've seen the recent volumes of the series shrink-wrapped. And according to the AOD forums, they do edit the series. I could care less about the fanservice, myself, but I don't like their false advertising of the series. At least Viz doesn't pretend I"s is anything else but a ecchi love triangle.
