I'm starting to wonder if it's a smart Idea to allow the idiot to dub Gundam at all.

For those wondering why I think this I listen to a podcast called "Voiceprint with Trevor Devall & Guests".

About 2 years ago there was an interview with James Corrigall who directed the dubs of Zeta Gundam, Gundam Seed & Gundam 00.

Now for all you die-hard gundam fans out there (especially penguintruth) I have to ask one thing:

HAVE YOU LISTENED TO THIS EPISODE!?!? It reveals how frightfully little James knows about the franchise!!

Just listen. They start talking about it 12 minutes into the podcast:

Given how crappy the Zeta Gundam dub was, no, he shouldn't be allowed.

He did direct the Black Lagoon dub, though, so I guess he can't be that bad. It's one of my favorite dubs.

According to our database he is an ADR director. Does he actually need to have an encyclopaedic knowledge of the franchise to do his job? Especially when they have a script consultant who has run websites and written books on the subject?

ADR Director...heh. I swear I'll never get used to these anime only roles.

When you're directing something like Gundam? Yes, you need KNOWLEGDE. Which is something James Corrigall lacks when it comes to Gundam.

As for Black Lagoon I have yet to see it but it looks excellent, it's clear that James knew what he was doing with that one and from what little I've seen of it looks well done.

Why? He's not writing or adapting it himself; he's taking the script, the actors, and putting the two together - and they had a Gundam expert on staff.

Uh... Automated Dialogue Replacement (or Additional Dialogue Recording) is far from an "anime-only" role. Yes, it's used in anime and video games when dubbing, but anything that is dubbed over has ADR done to it. A lot of times, when filming anything that's live-action, the audio from filming is unusable (due to ambient noises, etc), and the actors have to re-dub their own lines. That's still ADR. In college, for my Digital Art degree, I had to take Audio Production classes that included ADR.

Heck, one of the most famous examples of ADR, in the US, is Darth Vader. James Earl Jones had to re-dub Vader's lines, since he wasn't the guy acting in the suit.

He clearly didn't bother to ask him anything at all about the franchise because that link I posted in the first post reveals he knows VERY LITTLE.

@Dessa
I get the ADR part just fine. Even if you bring up Darth Vader the role of "ADR Director" was not part of the credited roles for movies 4-6. When it comes to film I am just more used to that role being described completely differently or having ADR appended with engineer, technician, supervisor, or even producer instead of director. For video games it's even less descriptive - usually only listing the studio where the recording took place.

The problem isn't that he doesn't know anything about Gundam, the problem is that his not doing a very good job directing a series. Gundam's dubs have been decent at best in the past 10 years. Gundam 00 in particular was awful with Setsuna sounding like someone doing a bad impression of Herro Yue.

Exactly.

I don't care if he knows thing one about Gundam as long as the dub is good. I don't think you necessarily need to know that much about Gundam to do a good dub for one. The problem is that the past few Ocean Gundam dubs have been poor.

NYAV Post has Ocean beat with their excellent Gundam Unicorn dub.
