When i checked out the titles here, the description of "Macross" is exactly what happens in robotech... are they the same anime?
Also, i have like a few different 'types' of macross or i'm guessing series... is there a certain order or something in which i should watch them to get everything right? thanks all... |

Robotech was made up of three different anime shows, Macross, Mospeda, and Southern Cross, with edits and changes to tie them together. The Macross anime made up the first story arc in Robotech. The rest of Robotech has nothing to do with Macross.

There's actually two branches of Macross... there's the Macross series and timeline started by the original TV series which runs like this...
Super Dimensional Fortress Macross Macross Plus Macross 7 and OAVs... And then there is the Macross line that runs from the condensed theatrical version of the TV series..... Macross: Do You Remember Love? Macross II I didn't include any of the various games, such as VF-X and VF-X2 for the PlayStation, or M3 for the Dreamcast. I don't include Macross II in with the original series as the timelines just don't work out.... and the stories are pretty incompatible as well. There is also Macross: Flashback 2012, but I haven't seen this and don't know where it goes. I think the general consensus is in the TV timeline, though.... There's another Macross OAV series currently being released in Japan, Macross Zero. I've not seen it yet, and therefore don't know where to place it. There's probably another few things that I've forgotten.... I'd suggest you watch them in the order I listed.... but remember that the TV series and DYRL are similar, but not the same.... the TV series is considered canon. |

I think it should be pointed out that Robotech is an American production (By Carl Macek and Harmony Gold) that uses animation from three separate anime titles. The plots to all three shows were re-written (to what extent, I don't personally know) to tie all three together.
There are three story arc's to Robotech, each arc being represented by a different anime title. It breaks down something like this: (Bold is the Robotech Arc, Italics is the anime title.) Robotech: Macross Saga = Super Dimensional Fortress: Macross Robotech: Masters = Super Dimensional Cavalry Souther Cross Robotech: New Generation = Genesis Climber Mospaeda I very well may be wrong on which anime corresponds to the second and third Robotech story arc, but I'm pretty sure that's right. And AFAIK, Gnollman is right about the continuity of the various Macross incarnations. The second arc is usually referred to as the Masters line, and the third is New Generation....

2012 is a playlist of Minmei's songs, so visually it is a recap of the tv series with some elements from the DYRL movie. It ends off with Misa, now in command of her own ship, launching off into space a few years after the tv series' conclusion (2012). Though "Do You Remember Love?" is suppose to be a movie within the Macross TV Universe timeline, some elements from the movie (such as the flight jackets/mecha) influence the latter Macross Plus and Macross 7. I haven't seen Macross Zero yet, but from what I can tell it takes place on South Atalia island while the Macross is being refitted - so just previous to the tv series. I've heard rumour Roy Fokker has a cameo. The original creators of Macross did not produce Macross II and so it has been said to take place in an alternate universe, I think some 80 years past the DYRL movie. It's not technically cannon. |

Only a very small part takes place on the island, most of it takes place in a completely different island. Roy Fokker has a large part, and we see the prototype Valkyries. I'd say it's about 5 years before the original series |

Robotech is often the cheaper way to watch Macross. There is a box set for like $45 of the Macross "saga". The real subbed dvds of Macross cost about $225-260. The subbed ones are restored and very very nice, but have no dubs due to rules put out by the ninja lawyers of Harmony Gold, who own alot of rights to Macross in the form of Robotech (that is why the other shows are held up and not out yet).
The show is alright in the Robotech form, but damn good in the subbed restored version. I say it is better to watch it like that. As for a summary of Macross, I can, but is a great plot you should try to watch, as many points come as suprises. |

It's been so long since I watched Robotech that I don't remember how different the stories are between it and the original Macross. At the very least, watching Robotech will spoil character deaths and whatnot. What I remember from the last time I watched any Robotech (caught the first twelve episodes a few years ago...aside from that, it's been a LONG time since I watched the show) was that, at least at that point, it was still fairly similar to the Macross story. So if you want to watch Macross without knowing anything about it beforehand, then yes, Robotech will probably spoil it. On the other hand, Robotech is the same animation (albeit, with edits) and probably a pretty similar story, so it might be more like watching an edited dub than a completely different show that happens to spoil Macross. In that case, no, Robotech isn't spoiling Macross, Robotech _is_ Macross. Macross Plus has very little to do with the original Macross, directly. It takes place on another planet some three decades later, and only a small amount of it takes place on Earth (which will not spoil anything that happened in Macross). Basically all it'll spoil is that the war eventually came to an end with a peaceful compromise -- although it won't tell you exactly how that came about. The mere fact that both humans and Zentradi are still around for a story set in 2040 already spoils this fact, though, so your knowing that Macross Plus even exists has basically taken care of that. In short: no, watching Macross Plus will not expose you to any significant spoilers. However, depending on how you look at it, watching Robotech might. |

...this gets me kinda confused again... wasn't Macross Plus meant to be watched as part of the series? I mean it was created by the same artist right? So how could it even be considered a spoiler? thanks again all[/b] |

Here is how the timeline works
Macross Zero ( 5 part direct Prequel to macross set during the global civil war) Super Dimensional Fortress Macross (This is a self contained show) Macross Do You Remember Love (A movie made of the events in macross and show in theaters in macross city very famous around the galaxy) Macross Flashback 2012 (Minmei's music video's and her concert for the send of the SDF-2 Megaroad the first human colonization ship) Macross Plus (Self Contained 4 part OVA has no direct links to any other series) Macross 7 + OVA's (sequel to macross containing recuring characters and chronicles the stories of the macross 7 colonization fleet) |

The intro and end for 2012 fits perfectly with the end of DYRL. It is the concert that we don't see (but hear) during the ending credits. I've seen a version of DYRL (back in the 80s) with the 2012 footage added, although I believe it was a fan job, it worked very well. Also, when 2012 came out, the only other series were the TV and Movie, so continuity wasn't quite as messy. |

That's the Super Dimensional Fortress Macross: Do you remember Love? Perfect Edition released by Bandai.... and re-released on DVD back in '98. Almost bought that when it came out in Japan. For the full, official chronology, including video, games, audio, and literature, have a peek at this. In short, Super Dimensional Fortress Macross, Episode one Macross Zero Super Dimensional Fortress Macross, Episodes 2-36 Flashback 2012 Macross M3 Dimensional Fortress Macross: Do you remember Love? (Made as a historical documentary/fiction in the Macross 'verse) Macross Plus Macross 7 Macross Digital Mission VF-X Macross VF-X2 Macross II remains in the parallel universe... where it belongs. Macross M3 was a Dreamcast game, and the sole reason I tried to get my Dreamcast modded. And failed, but hey.... VF-X and VF-X2 were PlayStation games, fighter sims. Pretty good games, but kind of hard in spots. There's a new Macross PS2 game out in Japan right now. Name escapes me, though.... |
