I think it was extremely helpful and sold me on a lot of titles Id've never looked at twice otherwise (most notably Azumanga Daioh, which showed me just how much I like the entire slice-of-life genre.)

That does remind me, I need to call up whoever-I-call-up and cancel that PiQ thing... it's high-quality from a material standpoint to be sure, but the content is just not my style. I need to put that money toward Otaku USA instead. Wink

While I didn't really subscribe for the DVD, I think it was a great insert for the mag while it was around. As for whether or not they got me interested in other titles, it was really just a hit or a miss. But I enjoyed it mostly because it allowed me to get a broader view of what I like and what I don't like, and some were good to watch just for the sake of watching.

Ones that particularly caught my attention the most were Kurau: Phantom Memory, Le Chevalier D'Eon (which I bought immediately), and Victorian Romance Emma. There are some others I probably would have never seen like Strawberry Marshmallow and Innocent Venus, which I ended up liking. Also, I was hesitant about watching Air, but when NTUSA put it on their disc I was finally able to sample it and I enjoyed the rest of the series. I also got to rewatch an episode of some shows I'd already seen but now dubbed like Mushi-Shi and Kanon when(before?) they first came out. There were many others that that I plan on buying when I get the chance simply because NTUSA put it on the DVD.

As for Otaku USA discs, most of the shows on there aren't straight off the line like they were with NTUSA, but I'm not saying that's a bad thing. I was actually able to watch Noein ep. 1, which I really liked a lot.

I bought a lot of the series that I sampled from those discs, several of which I severely doubt I would have even thought about buying otherwise. I can say with some certainty that I would never have bought Boys Be if I'd never seen the preview episode and I doubt I would have given Pumpkin Scissors or Peach Girl a thought without them either.

I'm not dropping the subscription to PiQ (it's not like they'd refund my money anyway) but I'm not exactly happy with how it's first issue looks. They've got until the subscription runs out to make me want it.

For now, I may start getting Otaku USA for the preview discs, assuming they can start getting a few more brand new series on them. (My sister bought the recent copy with the Aquarion preview episode which actually appealed to me. It was fun despite having much that I'd seen before in other mecha series.)

I'd like to watch more preview episodes legally on-line but I always seem to have problems with them for some reason.

The one I remember really specifically is the first episode of Rahxephon which was on one of the earlier Newtype DVDs. After I had watched that first episode, I quietly put my shoes on, left my apartment, and went immediately to the store to pick up the first DVD. And thank goodness the store was still open, who knows what I might have done otherwise Wink

Seriously though, that first episode really drew me into the series. It was the perfect title to promote on their free DVD.

I LOVED the free DVD's that came out with Newtype!!!
My only complaint is that the cover didn't allways say which anime or episodes were on the DVD's. So it was always a mystery what I was getting when I bought a copy.

Sad Sad Sad
