A lot of these I had no idea who they were. I did see some people I'm a big fan of like Utada and Kazuo Koike.

"Yoko Kamiyo"

I'm sure you mean Yoko Kamio. Had me confused for a while. Noone's at least heard of Hokusai? For shame.

It would be nice if kanji names have been provided. For people like me, it's much harder to recognized those names in romaji than in kanji.

Well, I'm not surprised that I don't know the majority of these people.

I think that I recognized the previous Prime Ministers name... Confused

I wonder how many palms are going to hit faces over Takanori Nishikawa and Kitano Takeshi.

Hardly anybody recognizes Koizumi or Hokusai, or even Beat freakin' Takeshi? How in the world did that happen? I can forgive the situation with Sakamoto, since his "Sukiyaki" hardly gets played anymore, but this is insane.

A lot I bet, particularly in regards to Takanori.

The other one that's going to generate some face smacking is Masashi Kishimoto.

It actually lists the two previous PMs. Shinzo Abe only served one term, while Kunichiro served three consecutively.

I wish they included Sugihara Chigune (the Japanese Schindler) in the list. I also wish more people had heard of Takemiya Keiko.

This isn't surprising at all. Most anime fans are not really into Japanese culture other than what they see in and associate with anime. Just because you like Jackie Chan doesn't mean you'll know who Anita Mui is. Likewise, there's no reason for Naruto fans to know who Sakamoto and Takeshi are....

Most American comic book fans won't know the names Rudolphe Töpffer or Richard Outcault, and they don't know that Benjamin Franklin was the first American editorial cartoonist (well, published editorial cartoonist) so it's not surprising that American fans of Japanese comics & cartoons wouldn't be familiar with Hokusai and his woodblock prints, nor their relation to modern manga.

The fact that so few people know the other pop-culture names I included in the survey is neither surprising, nor particularly bothersome to me. The fact that so few of them know certain anime & manga names isn't surprising, but it is somewhat bothersome.

Yeah, it's tragic, but not really all that surprising. Sadly, most of his work never made it into English (although Vertical is helping to change that), and Astro Boy is too archaic to appeal to mainstream anime fans today, despite its relatively recent low-cost release.

Very true. I wrote in a rather dramatic tone, yes, but I simply felt bemused (more than any other emotion) about it all. I find Takeshi amusing, if rather harsh - consider Ikinai, in which he has a bus full of losers plunge over a cliff - so I wish he attained more press.

I recognized Miyazaki and a couple of others. For me though, I'd do better with historical names from eras in Japanese history I've studied (WWII, Meiji restoration).
