Well, this is fun. I was trying to figure out exactly how the Full Metal Panic! & Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu TV series relate to the Full Metal Panic! manga. Well...come to find out, there also seem to be two different Full Metal Panic! manga; and like the TV series, one is more action-oriented & based off the original novels, while the other, Ikinari! Full Metal Panic!, is more comedic.
You'd think that this would just make my search for knowledge easier. One would naturally assume that it's a clear cut case of the action-oriented series being based on the action-oriented manga, and Fumoffu being based on Ikinari!, right? Well...not. Apparently Fumoffu is still somewhat based on some of the action-oriented manga's side stories. But does this mean that Ikinari! has been completely skipped for manga adaptation? Or did it still worm its way into Fumoffu? In short, I'm still confused as to how Full Metal Panic! adapts from manga to anime. If anyone would be so kind as to clear it up for me, I'd be very grateful. |

Apparently Full Metal Panic! was originally based off a series of short stories and novels. I could type out all the info but since I'm lazy I'll do the 'ol cut and paste. Hope this helps.
"The Full Metal Panic was originally a series of novels and short stories written by Shoji Gatoh, with original art by Shiki Douji. The short stories are still ongoing in Monthly Dragon Magazine. The novels are the 'complete' version of the FMP! story, and contains many plots, events, characters that the other formats don't have. The anime, which most fans are likely familiar with, focuses on about half of half of everything. To explain: the anime does not include much of the comedic adventures, it sticks mostly to the dramatic half. And then the anime cuts that short, in a sense, telling only about half of the serious part of the story. The novels continue the serious story beyond the point at which the anime stops. The anime also leaves out a number of details and explanations, meaning the anime is really very 'bare bones', compared to the novels and even the manga. (although the anime does tell the story in a way that is mostly well contained- the anime ending is an effective and mostly acceptable ending) The 'Full Metal Panic!' manga is considerably slow moving when compared to the anime. It includes a number of different events, and does work some of the stuff in the anime differently. The changes are very noticeable, but don't really change the primary story overall. After 2 years and 4 volumes, the story is only halfway through the anime's story plot set through episodes 9-12. Another noticeable difference between the manga and the other FMP! formats is the way the manga begins. Instead of the story starting from Sousuke's POV (like the anime), and manga starts with Kaname's POV. Sousuke's odd behavior is known to the anime audience, it isn't supposed to be as well understood, initially, to the manga audience. The 'Ikinari! FMP!' manga does not really align itself with any of the other formats, as it consists of mostly very not-serious situations involving Sousuke and Kaname, with Kyouko, the class teacher, and a little annoying brat-thing as the primary support cast. Kurtz does make an appearance in volume 4, but his role is extremely comical." --Taken off this site. (Beware of spoilers) |

Well, I haven't read all of the manga, but from what I can tell, the anime took parts of the current manga ADV has been releasing. Like for example, the one panty problem was used in the anime. This is the case with most anime adaptions of manga that are only lightly based on a manga. I'd really like the more action packed version of the manga if I can find it. I've seen pics from either it, or the novels.

Thank you very much. This was very helpful. However, I'm still somewhat in the dark about Fumoffu. Is it derived from the original manga, Ikinari!, or a mixture of both? Also, I'm wondering about some of the characters that were first ntroduced in Fumoffu (Ren, Atsunobu, Tsubaki, etc.). Were they in the original novels & manga? I've seen some images of them that appear to be from the manga, but I'm not sure from what incarnation exactly (or perhaps they're in both incarnations?). |

I assume that most of the other characters you see in Fomuffu? are probably in the novels. But who am I to say since I haven't seen or read all of it.
I also got word about an additional manga. It's called FMP! SURPLUS and the first volume was recently released by Kadokawa. I'm guessing it's an extra compilation of comics perhaps derived from the short stories due to it's popularity. I have yet to find any real info about it though. There might be a third season of FMP! in the future, but it's still too early to tell. It would be nice if ADV could translate and release the novels since the entire story is complete already. |
