Anybody know of any good slice of life type animes? I have GTO and Love Hina. I can't exactly describe what slice of life anime is but you will probably know it when you see the anime. Actually animenewsnetwork.com was the first time i heard of "slice of life" genre. Very Happy

I'm not crystal clear on the "Slice of Life" thing, but here are some good anime similar to the ones you listed:

Fruits Basket
FLCL

Thats all I can think of for now.

Fruits Basket's a great one. I'd suggest giving Azumanga Daioh a shot, but I know I'd get a lot of oppositsion from the ANN staff on this. Would "Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu" (yes, that question mark is in the title...) count as slice-of-life? If so, try it out, but I'd suggest checking into the original Full Metal Panic! first if you've not already seen it.

"Slice of Life" refers to a story about ordinary, everyday events. FLCL, then, wouldn't make the cut. But His and Her Circumstances would. Maison Ikkoku might, although it's more of a melodramatic romance farce; slice of life tends to be less plot driven and more about characterization and atmosphere.

So would You're Under Arrest count as a "slice of life" anime?

With Maison Ikkoku, I'd definetly say it does. Although I agree that it is a bit melodramatic, they are still real world circumstances and the story very heavily relies on the development of those characters around those circumstances. In order for characters to develop, they must have some set of circumstances to do so, do they not?

Definetly agree with Karekano though. ^_^

I haven't seen or read YUA, but slice of life isn't just about stuff that can happen-it's about the ordinary, the everyday. Adventure stories, even realistic ones, aren't slice of life stories because they're about unusual events. I still don't think Maison Ikkoku is truly slice-of-life because despite its realistic setting it's still primarily about putting the characters through plot contrivances.

Raymond Carver and Carol Shields are two writers whose work is mostly slice of life, if you want to get a feel for where the term comes from.

To Heart is considered 'slice of life', so is Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou. Despite the scifi elements both of these shows have, they're still highly 'realistic'.

Ayashi no Ceres wouldn't exactly be slice-of-life. More like a darker shoujo/romance title with heavy sci-fi & mythological elements.

Figure 17 is a large chunk of slice of life, with a battle thrown in at the end.

Im not sure what slice of life really means but from the replies it seems to me that it deals with real emotions and circumstances we all feel. Naruto would then fit into this catigory, as he is one that struggles to be noticed. Although it is portrayed in a kinda fantasy, arent his feelings the same as most kids feel in real life?

And thats my Slice of Life (or two cents) Wink

YUA is not an adventure series, not by a long shot. The movie kinda was, but that was a huge departure from the show. I'm not certain that it's slice-of-life either because many of the episodes seemed like plot contrivances.

A few Ghibli movies no doubt count, such as "Only Yesterday" or "My Neighbors, the Yamadas."
