Well, it is that time again: The end of the year, good old '03.

I have to say this has been possibly one of the best years in anime (almost as good as '98 was). There was a lot of good releases by ADV: Rah Xephon, Noir, FMP. Plus, the promising new series Bandai brought over, Witch Hunter Robin (or as I like to call it, Law and Order: Special Witches Unit, lol). Although it wasn't all rosy in '03. There was the debauchery of Initial D by Tokyopop, a show they cut up to get it on TV and still to this day never acheived it.

But overall I have to say it was a good year.

A few personal anime-related sidenotes: '03 was the first year I have watched entire series in subtitled format. Namely Marcoss TV, Macross 7, Area 88, and Initial D. Also, in the anime merchandise department, I hooked me up with 3 sweet 1/48 Yamato Valkyries w/FAST packs. If you are a Macross fan, you have to at least own one of these, they are awesome! And finally I attended my first anime con (ACen '03). An intresting experiance to say the least, I would like to attend '04, but so far it does not loook do-able on the financial side (got Vegas and a G35 to save for Very Happy ).

Well, that's about it. What are some of the other forum members thoughts on '03?

Anyway, all of you have a happy holidays!

'04 looks like it will be a promising year with Yukikaze, Kiddy Grade, and *hopefully* Macross Zero!

This year was a very good year (except for the few things that cropped up in August). I got to see more anime then there was on t.v. I saw Gunsmith Cats, some of Initial D, a very boring one that everyone else seems to be afraid of, those are just to name a few. I also was able to get my paws on a copy of Excel Saga, which my dogs decided to chew up the corner. And I also got a bunch of manga (hopefully I'll get some more for Christmas), including Megatokyo, which my dogs decided to shred the cover, I will put it back together.......

Good year for me, too, as my collection of DVD's went from 0 to nearly 100 starting in April. I was pretty much able triple my exposure to anime and started in on manga, as well. And all with only 2 fansubs (Goddess and Naruto), both of which I intend to purchase soon (Naruto when it's released). Definitely a good year. Very Happy

I hope (and I know I've said this before) Naruto and One Piece get licensed early this year, so they can start to be released late 2004 or early 2005. Otherwise, Adult Swim and Toonami should be able to fill time as I finish purchasing some series I've started on.

I'm hoping Naruto gets released soon too Laughing

The American release of the Cowboy Bebop movie was a pleasant surprise for me, and I bought alot of the Inu-yasha DVDs. I'm looking forward to Samurai Champloo in 2004 Razz

Didn't buy anything when I was a kid. Extensive savings. Wink

Pays off to save that money when you're younger.

It was the year that the mildly entertaining Spirited Away stole the Best Animated Feature Oscar from the far superior Lilo & Stitch.

Hey, no one else mentioned it, so you get my own personal spin.

Also, it was the year anime fandom boomed from being a miniscule niche to being a tiny niche, not counting the kiddy stuff.

I just remembered another thing. FLCL aired on regular cable TV, barely edited. I hope this spells good things for the future.

Well: the final volume of Kare Kano came out; news is on the horizon that Tokyo Babylon is finally getting translated; X/1999 is *finally* on a normal schedule (in America, at least Anime hyper); Yami no Matsuei was brought to the US...

yeah, lots of fun stuff. Three cheers for companies releasing "questionable" titles! Shounen ai, "ladies" comics, less-well-known titles--everything that would never have been released in earlier years!

Tenchi, you're a smart guy and a nice one, but you're wrong, wrong, wrong. Real wrong.

It did?

Oh, nevermind. I thought you were talking about the manga, not the anime. I don't know why I thought that. Anime smallmouth + sweatdrop

Also, I was happy to get the first series Sailor Moon subtitled and uncut boxset, even if the audio sync during the first opening is at least a second off. And I liked downloading the raws of the live-action Sailor Moon.

For that matter, I liked downloading Narutaru (the Shadow Star anime) up until the three-episode climax, which I just found brutal and abhorrent.

And I liked seeing anime at Fantasia, back in Montreal after a one year absence, where I saw FLCL (visually interesting, but nothing I'd buy), Sakura Wars: The Movie (zzz.... boring... at least if you don't know the characters), and Tamala 2010: A Punk Cat in Space (I thought it was endearingly weird for a while, then I thought the film was poorly structured, but I didn't know at the time it was just the first film in a trilogy, so it's forgivable). Though my favourite Fantasia film this year was Corey Yuen's So Close, which, apparently, you're supposed to hate if you take HK filmmaking at all seriously (at least according to some of the HK film fan pages I've visited), but I'm not generally an HK film fan, so I have no difficulty liking it.

Nah, my opinion is only subjective, subjective, subjective. Real subjective.

As is the opinion of the plurality of the Academy members whom voted in that category, ultimately.
