I was just wondering which Anime you think don't deserve the hype and are overated by many new and old anime fans. Here is some I can think of off the top of my head.

Gundam Wing
Gundam Seed
Hellsing
Full Metal Panic 2nd season
Zoids
Beyblade
Pokemon
Samurai Deeper Kyo
Rurouni Kenshin (after ShiShio just went down hill before is amazing)
DragonBall Z

Well that's all I can think of right now anyone got anything to add to the list

Zoids is over-rated? I wasn't aware anyone thought more of it than that it was a half-hour toy commercial.

Hellsing, eh, it's enjoyable and the manga certainly beats the anime with a knotted pine board. It has a lot of fans, but that doesn't lead to "over-rated".

Wing = Gundam in the minds of many less-informed anime viewers. Wing is also quite a good story and certainly is interesting to watch. It's not the best Gundam series, but it brought a lot of people into more serious anime.

Seed is the new Gundam series. Hype always follows a new Gundam series, plain and simple. There's a good series beneath the hype, but time will tell if it has any staying power. After all, remember all the hype that followed Turn A? Now that was over-rated.

Is the second season of Full Metal Panic even over?

Beyblade and Pokemon..............only in the minds of 8 year olds. Even the older folks who watch the series don't proclaim it to be some artistic tour de force.

DBZ..................... no comment.

Samurai Deeper Kyo, where's the hype? I haven't heard any hype. Am I missing something here?

Over-rated generally means it has received accolades it's undeserving of. Good examples would be Blood: The Last Vampire, Spriggan, or Akira. These are all movies that had people raving because "It was so cool", but then you watch the films and then notice that it's just two hours of flash and dazzle without any semblance of a coherent story and/or a paper thin story that's just an excuse for more flash and dazzle.

Popular and more "mainstream" doesn't equal over-rated, it just means a more diverse and potentially less informed fanbase.

I agree with Blood: The Last Vampire being overrated. The "movie" was only about 45 minutes, had no real story, and just screamed "play the video game and read the manga for the rest of the story". It was like they blew too much money on the animation and the story got cut because of it.

If you spend enough time on IRC and animenfo.com you can see the hype there is. There was a fair bit of hype over Samurai Deeper Kyo at some of the cons. Akira is one I forgot that is one way overated movie.

Ghost in the Shell and Jin-roh are my two big bombs. While I like both and enjoy them, they do fall way short of the hype I heard. When I finished watching them I was like "That's it!? There's nothing special about that."

I loved Akira so, for me, it was perfectly hyped.

I think Zoids was WAY over rated.....I watched it and was like
--_--. It didn't appeal to me at all. Also DBZ.....Mainly because it had a re-occuring plot, and I can't stand that at all.

Gundam Wing : Because it falls short on all the great Gundam aspects and just has bishouned guys and overpower mechs rocking everything. Where as U.C has aces and hard fought battles

Gundam Seed: Because it takes the show about 30 episodes to get good. And the overpowered Mech thing again.

Hellsing: Good show but it's lack of character development and shorth length make it not as good as it could have been

Zoids: Potential for interesting stuff there but ruined by a horrible dub and only available butchered

Pokemon: Same old, same old as it has been for about 6 years

Samurai Deeper Kyo: Good show interesting premise with an incredibly strange ending that leave you askign what the hell id I just watch

Ruouni Kenshin: The christian arc and stuff after the ShiShio arc which were done just to extend the tv series are bad however the first 60 or so eps are amazing

DragonBallZ: Just can't compare with the manga show is to long and boring and there are much better fighting anime's out there. The power up sequences are just ridiculous.

Of course, the big problem with the term "overrated", at least on a message board, is that, by definition, it means you disagree with a significant amount of people. I can use it to describe certain cartoons, TV shows, and movies in my blog with impunity, since I'm the only person that writes there, but if it's a conversation, you kind of have to present at least one reason why you think it's overrated in order to defend your views.

No disagreement there, especially Jin-Roh, which I consider to be about the most disappointing anime film I had ever seen, at least compared to the hype. I just didn't care about the story or the characters or what happens to the characters. Of course, while I think Jin-Roh is the most disappointing anime film, I don't consider it to be the most overrated since it doesn't have an Oscar.

I rented the first volume of Witch Hunter Robin over the weekend, but I wasn't terribly impressed, though, I don't know if I'd exactly call it overrated, since I can easily understand why it would appeal to some people. It could just be one of those popular (well, "popular" by non-kiddy franchise anime standards) shows which just isn't "my bag", just like Bezerk.

Of course, keep in mind that, while I obviously like it just fine, I consider the original Tenchi Muyo OVA series overrated, at least compared to the Tenchi Universe/In Love/Forever continuity (though not for animation quality), primarily because I really like Kiyone, but also because things make more sense and there isn't that ambiguous stuff about goddesses. And also keep in mind that I think that The Empire Strikes Back is overrated and Return of the Jedi is underrated (as are the prequels).

The problem with topics like these is that they're based to much on oppinion but not enough of facts. For example you may not like a title that everyone goes crazy over, does that really make it over hyped because you didn't think it was great? Not really.

Let's look at Dragonball Z. If anything I'd say it's doing a nice job living up to it's hype. It was never initially expected to blow up the way it has over here, it was just another action cartoon in the eyes of the networks. It was the fans that built up the hype and rightfully so. It's become the most popular anime to ever hit US shores and the hype is fully supported by the fans/viewers and it's merchandise sales.

I'd say a good example of overhyped is Craeyst Raygal's example of Spriggan. ADV pushed that thing like crazy, advertizing it on their tapes and DVD years before it's release, singing it's praises and pretty much calling it the next Akira. Then it comes out and, well, it did OK, but it was still a fairly ho-hum title, certainly not the instant classic that ADV was trying to build it up to be.

Not too long ago I would have joined in the chorus of Akira- and Spriggan-bashers, but I'm rethinking my stance after reading Susan Sontag's book Against Interpretation, which makes a strong case against prioritizing "substance" over "style", and includes an essay titled "The Imagination of Disaster" which, while written years before the aforementioned films were made, addresses the merits of these films better than I could.

Well, you wont find me bashing Akira, I think it rightfully deserves any hype it gained, it's deffinatly stood the test of time. Don't get me wrong with Spriggan, I'm in no way bashing it, I thought it was a good movie, I just didn't see it as being nearly as spectacular as ADV would have liked us to have thought.

I kinda agree with you on that, if there was a subbed version available, then I would be buying the Zoids DVD (I'm talking about New Century Zero here, not Charotic Century).

Well, I certainly have to disagree about Gundam Wing. It's a masterpiece.
