I'm actually surprised that Catherine still sold more in Japan than the US with the record sales Atlus was publicizing. Either way, sales like that help make the business case for Atlus bringing even more games to the US, even if they won't all be the same quality as Catherine.

But are those numbers good, bad, or ok?

They are very good, especially for Atlus USA.

Kind of surprised Innocent Sin on the PSP sold more than Devil Survivor 2, but then again the PSP seems like more of a big deal in Japan.

For an Atlus game, those numbers are very good. They specialize in games that tend to garner attention from a smaller audience. Catherine has been a major hit for them. Even if the numbers seem relatively small, Atlus makes it work by using smaller print runs and making sure that most of what they print is sold. That's a big part of how they can remain successful without any blockbuster hits. |

So the other day I was reading Bill Simmons' Grantland or as it's otherwise known, ESPN's End Run Around Disney Standards and Morals, and I was quite surprised to see a review of Catherine featured there. I think that exemplifies how Catherine was expanded beyond the otaku/weeaboo crowd and hit the mainstream.

I'm very surprised to see that review. Didn't think Catherine would ever be featured in a place like that. And it helps that Catherine is different from the norm these days in branching out to a different story theme.

Hopefully the price will drop on the game very soon and those sales numbers will increase even more!

I was really surprised how much I enjoyed Catherine.. I'm really not much of a puzzle enjoying gamer but Catherine was just brilliant.. I actually liked the puzzles and of course the story itself is fascinating enough to keep you going even if you don't care for the puzzles..
I rented this game when I played it.. but I definitely plan on buying a new copy soon ^^ |

Good news for Atlus means good news for all of us! Good to see their jump into the current-gen consoles was a successful one.
I finally played Catherine last weekend, and I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would! The characters and script were extremely well written. I looove JRPGs, but let's be honest... the dialogue in lots of them tend to be somewhat cheesy and generic. I didn't get that feeling at all with Catherine. Everything about the way the actors interacted with one another felt real, like these characters could be actual people I'd meet in a bar. I wasn't all that crazy about the tower climbing (man those puzzles were hard!) but the story and crazy art direction were enough to keep me hooked. Definitely worth playing. Let's hope the team is now hard at work on Persona 5! |

Yeah yeah that's great Atlus, now get to work doing a better promotion job on KOFXIII! Jeez maybe Ignition should've gotten a second chance.

I would assume that there were a ton of pre-orders, and that's why there was so many sold during the first week. |

I'm glad to hear that it's doing so well.
I haven't played Catherine yet (living in Europe is suffering), but good sales elsewhere both helps give me confidence that I wont be disappointed by a random cancellation and that it's good enough that I'll enjoy it when it eventually makes it over here. |
