Hey all, first time poster - its great to be abroad!
I'm relatively new to manga and graphic novels, although I am no stranger to anime. I've only really completed one full series of manga and that is Evangelion (which I loved) and I am almost finished with Battle Angel Alita. I'm also reading Kino no Tabi as well as Ghost in the Shell.
But to my reason of posting.. I've recently got into the anime Elfen Lied and I enjoyed it a lot. My reason for enjoying it.. well.. it had the perfect balance of cute and gory in a small package. Now I am not as shallow as I sound! Thats not the only reason why I liked it. I did enjoy the plot although it was sort of stereotypical in my opinion, but I really loved the characters and the drama. I thought the characters were scripted perfectly. I could really feel Lucy's pain and how she felt so discarded and different from the human race.. It's a damned shame the manga hasn't been translated yet.
So, my real question is if anyone can recommend me a title or two of something similar - in manga form. Heck, I'll even like recommendations for similar anime. Even if you didn't enjoy the series, perhaps you know of something that you'd think I would like. Please share!

Hmm, I've yet to read any of her works, but apparently "cute and gory" is the art of Junko Mizuno down to a point. Pure Trancem published by Viz is her most easily-found book.

Sorry to nitpick but Pure Trance is published by Last Gasp. But totally agree with the Mizuno recommendation.
Also, sweet avatar.

whoa, Pure Trance looks nuts. Hopefully I can find it at the local book store to give it a little trial.
Also - thanks for the avatar compliment. I've ordered the last final volumes of Alita off of amazon.com to get the 4-for-3 deal (I know I'm cheap) and I can hardly wait for them to arrive.
Keep em' coming!

Godchild would work, I think...as well as X/1999. Both are quite gorey, and cute to boot.

Gunslinger Girl doesn't have too much gore, but there is carnage at least. And cute little girls causing it.

Maybe we should be thinking Bokusatsu Tenshi Dokurochan here, since that had cute girls with heads flying off and everything, not to mention loli and people getting turned into animals.

You're right there, I was thinking of those three children's tales adaptions she done, like Hansel & Gretel.
And thanks for the av comment, glad to see someone recognizes No. 5.

Try the Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni manga or anime, it's a great horror/loli story. The manga is more gory though

Yeah, I was reading it when it was still being released, so waiting for the third volume was hell. I even had a dream that it finally came out. I almost wish Viz had made the announcement that they canned it (and there was little doubt since it was one of their worst sellers ever supposedly) instead of leading people on, but I'm sure the editors were hoping that Blue Spring sold well enough to warrant a resurrection, which it didn't...

Someone mentioned Hansel & Gretel, which made me think of Brothers Grimm, which made me think of Little Red Riding Hood, which made me think of...
Benkyo Tamaoki's Tokyo Akazukin. Take a cute Little Red Riding Hood-ish protagonist, mix her into a story with extreme violence, loli-references and cannibalism and you're pretty close to this! It simply has to be seen to be believed.
