I picked up volume 1 recently due to the fact that I read the name "Azuma", thought it sounded familiar, then got closer and realized its the same creator of Azumanga Daioh. I picked up Volume 1 without hesitation and loved it.

The main character, Yotsuba, reminds me a lot of Tomo and Chiyo from Azumanga Daioh. This series just keeps a constant uplifting tone that I love very much. Even when she is sad, you smile because she just looks so cute or the event that made her sad is funny itself. I guess all I can say is that the book just makes me happy Very Happy ... until I put it down. Sad

What do you think of Yotsuba&! and why?

I've read the series up to vol 3 and I can say it only gets better. It is so true that as you read it you just can't help but feel happy. It must be Yotsuba's ability to see something amazing in the smallest stuff. That and her interactions with the sisters next door are my favorite parts. You'd think they would want to avoid her at all costs because of all the wacky stuff she does. I also love how she interacts with her father's giant friend. I can't remember what vol it is in but there is an entire chapter about him that is so funny!

I guess the best part of this work is that it is funny without resorting to forced humor. Everything about it seems to innocent (for lack of a better word).

And I agree. I see Chiyo-chan in Yotsuba as well. Chiyo was just smarter/more aware.

Asked to describe it in one word, The word would be "charming". I can't remember offhand another work which so observantly captured the truth about being six years old and just discovering the world. Yotsuba is about the cutest thing imaginable, whether she's giving out flowers on the corner or uppercutting a goat. Anime smile It's interesting in that it seems to be a story completely about women- the only major male characters thus far are Jumbo and Yotsuba's dad. That strikes me as odd because the author is a guy, from what I understand. But it seems to be carried fairly well. Jumbo is awesome, BTW, even if his crush on Sakaki is overplayed.

There seems to be more serious stuff waiting in the wings- Yotsuba's origins, only hinted at thus far, have the air of some tragedy she's too young to comprehend. The recent trend of making chapter covers by depicting Yotsuba with an older character, mimicing their style of dress, is also intriguing. It's a kid's game of dress-up, of course, but may also be a metaphor for the search for personal identity- trying out various roles to find your true self. Very interesting.

This is also one of the few manga I can recall about a grade-schooler that isn't polluted by the banality of pre-pubescent shoujo romance.

I picked up volume one recently after reading a review for it here on ANN, and I was so pleasantly surprised. I love Azumanga Daioh but have never read the manga, so I wasn't sure how this would be.

I ended up buying Yotsuba& v.1 for my 11 year old neice. She could use some encouragement in reading ... she absolutely loves it. This thread reminds me that I promised to go back this weekend for volume 2. It's so adorable without being overly sweet.

This is one of my absolute favorites. Azuma is truly talented. It's so simple, yet captivating. I can't help but smile when I'm reading it.

I actually see a little Osaka in Yotsuba. Like in volume 1, when spoiler[Yotsuba's trying to figure out how a swing works.]
