Looks like Viz Media has licensed Rie Hiroe's Black Lagoon Manga in the US. Volume 1 appears to have an August release date.

Well if that's true then I'm glad to hear it. It will be nice to read the original material. And at this rate the manga might be out before we ever see the Second Barrage on dvd anyway.

I agree. If this is true, this is great news indeed. While I do prefer anime over manga, I'll be happy to get more Black Lagoon in any way that I can. Especially since the second season of the anime is in limbo.

I guess the only downside is that we most likely won't have the awesome English dialogue of the anime. Perhaps Viz should consult the folks at The Ocean Group. Smile

Well, great! Because I'm willing to read all of it, though I haven't seen a single episode of the anime.

Edit: Crap, I just realized this is VIZ. I was hoping for Dark Horse...

...What??? Shocked

*Picks up dropped jaw*

I always knew the possibility was there, since it's a Shogakukan title, but I honestly didn't think Viz would get it. I was thinking that Dark Horse would eventually work their magic again like they did with Gantz.

There's a couple of things that I'm quite curious about:

- I really wonder what line it'll be in: the Signature line, or their regular line?
- The release date - the volumes are being compiled at a really slow pace in Japan (due to the slow release of the chapters in its serialization, I assume), so I wonder how fast they're going to release it here. I suspect a quarterly release ATM, though it won't be long before they catch up, which means that it might take at least a year before seeing another volume in North America, after we catch up with Japan.

There's no reason to doubt the legitimacy. Simon and Says lists all upcoming Viz books; there are also some other new licenses and various other reprints (such as One Pound Gospel) coming out this summer and fall.

The Signature line is reserved for works that are... uh, for a lack of a better phrase, classic and "intellectually-stimulating." As entertaining as Black Lagoon may be, it's neither the former and certainly not the latter.

I don't think it's quite like how the Editor's Choice line used to be, where they'd drop off anything that has an "M" rating into it, even trash like Tough.

And if Viz puts it under their "Viz Media" line, there shouldn't be any paranoia about releasing it. Black Lagoon thrives on its vulgarity, and its demographic is for the adults, not the pre-teens that Viz's shounen series are for.

Maybe they can get the cast to do a books on tape version of the manga. that would be fun and interesting lol.

This kind of surprised me too. I was just trolling the web looking for info on Second Barrage and I came across the manga listing in Amazon. I usually get my news from here not the other way around....

I rather they do a near translation of the Japanese text. Some of the Japanese text is loaded with pop-culture references and the like. The translation done by Geneon really stripped some of the charm of the original. (Rip-Off Church? WTF?!?)

I was browsing through the Viz sale @ TRSI and you can pre-order vol 01 already even though its Aug 08.

Anyone want to place bets on what Viz will censor first? (No, I'm not joking or being sarcastic. They're screwy enough to do anything.)

Well the only thing really that could be censored is the language. There's fanservice in it but there' no nudity or really any sexual situations. Just a lot of cussing. Unless they wanna pull a Witchblade and give Revy pants....

My response from AoD.

HellKorn wrote:
Of their old, "defunt" Action line, none of these have been edited.

Of their new "Viz Media" line, only the following of these have been edited, to my knowledge: Flames of Recca, Fullmetal Alchemist (one edit), MÄR, Midori Days (one edit, I think?), Read or Die (volume four, not certain how much), and possibly Zatch Bell!.

So, unless I'm mistaken, six titles out of 48 (not including the Inu Yasha ani-manga) titles have been edited in that respective.

And you have Bastard!!, which is in the line with an "M" rating, along with Portus. Along with various examples of manga that has risque content that hasn't gotten edited.

For that matter, what the hell is there to edit in Black Lagoon, anyway? For the first two volumes, the only thing that comes to mind is one panel of Revy's breasts. Yeah, sure, a real overload there.

Viz obviously gives out M ratings frequently enough, considering the content they have. Black Lagoon is likely to be given that rating.

By the by, outside of their Shonen Jump line (and to a notably lesser extent, Shonen Jump Advanced) they rarely ever touch up on anything that isn't being targeted at pre-teens. And the only exceptions there are the Shana novel and MAYBE Read or Die. Aside from those, nothing.

All I see in this thread is a typical knee-jerk reaction where there's only a few examples of inconsistency by a company and some fans exaggerate it, trying to make it seem like a "trend." Others follow, not even logically considering that there is a very weak basis for this belief.

I could very well be wrong in my prediction that Viz won't edit whatever minimal content there is to potentially cover in Black Lagoon. But until I'm proven otherwise, it's just another case of paranoia.

Yeah.

I've got a question does the manga go further than the anime show. I really enjoyed the anime and hoped for more so if the manga goes further it would be great.
