Guys which one do you think is better? The regular dvd that we purchase individually or the thinpack set. Well last week I bought volume one of Pretear and when I came to buy the second volume I saw that the store has the thinpack. I was really mad at first because why didn't they put the thin set last week when I bought the first volume.

So I'm asking which one do you think I should buy the individual disc or the thinpack. If I choose to buy the thinpack (cause it is much cheaper), do I really miss anything when I will buy the regular one? Is there anything difference?

Welcome to one of the first lessons you learn when starting to buy anime Very Happy

Of course they're going to hold out on the thinpacks as long as possible to make as much money as they can with individual disks. Usually, what you're paying for with individual volumes are getting it quicker than those who hold out for thinpacks and often also extras like booklets, figurines, interviews, bonus episodes, additional art, etc. What, if anything, you miss out on depends on the release. If anything, I think some initial buyers are getting irritated at the fact that thinpacks are often coming out relatively quickly after the last individual volume these days, as they presume - and perhaps rightfully so - that one of the things they're shelling out more money for is to get the release considerably sooner than those who hold out for thinpacks.

Personally I wait for thinpacks now that I'm aware that they'll usually come out sooner or later, more because of space issues than anything else. It's all a matter of budget, space and preference.

Personally I prefer box sets or thinpack sets because they're usually cheaper and I usually don't find myself really wanting extras for that particular show. There are certain series I'm really glad I bought each individual volume for (such as Evangelion) but if the thinpack is at a significantly lower price, which it almost always is, then I'm going to buy it.

I go off a case-by-case basis. For example, your Pretear issue- Pretear is an ADV title. ADV removes all extras, save previews, on their thinpack releases. A quick glance at the singles still in stock at TRSI shows the extras include interviews, 'behind the scenes' special, art gallery, etc. I like this kind of stuff, and in your case would proably just hunt down the singles (which are usually very cheap at this point, if you know where to look.)

On the flip side, the Nuku Nuku Dash discs only had clean open/close for extras. I don't care about that, so the thinpak currently on sale at TRSI is tempting.

For non-ADV titles that come with extras intact, it depends- have I already started buying singles/how far in am I with singles, and how cheap can I find the singles (since by the time they get to thinpaks, the singles usually get clearanced out and can be had on the cheap.)
I have, on rare occasion, found titles where I can get the originals for less than the thinpak.

That's pretty much what it usually boils down to: price and content. of course, I'm running low on space now, so I don't mind spending a lil' more for a thinpak these days- provided the content is there.

I agree with DuelLadyS; it all depends on he release. ADV titles with stripped extras anger me; Azumanga for instance. I actually bought vol. 6 after I bought the thinpak, just so I could see the mini movie. However, series with minimal extras in the first place, or series that actually get the extras kept in the box (like Princess Tutu) are ones that I'll actually buy the thinpak.

Thinpacks are cheaper and they save a lot of room. I choose thinpack for those reasons.

It really doesn't matter to me, really depends on the circumstances. In most cases the regular cases and their artboxes look much better than the thinpak cases I've found. Thinpaks are significantly cheaper though so that is definitely a plus. On the other hand they are also released much later than the originals so that's the price you pay for getting it that cheap. Thinpaks also are sometimes stripped of extras which are occasionally worth it though sometimes they also are not. Thinpaks also do take up a lot less space on the shelf.

All in all if I'm buying a series late I prefer the thinpak as it is cheaper and the fact it takes up so much less space on my already crowded shelf is a bonus. If a series is new though I prefer buying them regular as the limited edition artboxes are always nice and I don't have to wait nearly as long to obtain them.

Of course there is a theoretical point I wouldn't even consider buying the regular DVDs due to cost. Basically the longer a series is the more expensive it is to buy. Ya get upwards of 100 episodes with 5 per disc at most and that gets to be more than I'd be willing to shell out for it. In those cases I'd hold for the thinpak. I think FMA and 12 Kingdoms and E7 come close to that point, if they were much longer I'd likely have just waited.

Depends on the series. The advantage of the thinpacks is obviously the price. However ADV is pretty strict about not putting any extars onto the thinpacks because they feel that's a bonus for those who buy the singles. If I REALLY enjoy a series I buy the singles along with the artbox (I'm a big artbox fan). If I enjoy the series and want it but am not completely infatuated with it I'll wait for a later collection pack of some sort. I also do this for those long series, like shonen jump titles for examples or the Inu Yasha ones for my last gf.

Thank you so much guys for your opinion.

So the thinpak is the way to go if you really don't care about the extra things like previews, behind the scenes, art design etc.

I might as well buy the thinpak because I only wanted to watch the series.

Er..... I have one more question though, if the series you wanted to buy has mini episode/movie or a short OVA. Does it come along to thinpaks or you need to buy the last dvd of that specific title? Because Chobits has a mini episodes called Chibits.
Like what Maryohki said she bought the last dvd of Azumanga just to see the mini movie.

But thank you guys for the help.

Sometimes they add certain things. I've seen the live-action Boogiepop Phantom movie in the BP thinpack.

I usually buy my anime in boxset form, though if it's a series I really like, then I'll most likely buy the singles.

Though that number is beginning to increase, and my wallet isn't liking that one bit. Razz

Out of the 70 or so DVD's I have, I've never bought a thinpack once. Although it costs way more to do it this way, I just think they look better on my DVD shelf like this.

The extras as well and the earlier release time are a bonus as well.

I have to agree with pityless/envy. They look better. Period. But, since that seems a little vain, there's another problem with thinpacks that I have. I can rarely open one without the disk flying out. Sounds crazy, but anyone with this issue knows what I'm talking about.

Yeah, thin packs are less appealing, and for whatever reason the majority of the time have ugly art on them (look at Excel Saga. Ew...although that's a bad example, since the boxed set also looks awful.)

I have consider buying one or two for whatever reason (almost bought the Eva thin pack when it first came out, and the individual DVDs were $30 everywhere) it never happened. I have the Nadesico brick though, and I might buy one or two Gundam shows in that form if I ever feel like it...
