I have two volumes of manga in hardcover form, the first volume of Akira and the first volume of Hellsing, both of which I got from Barnes and Noble. It seems pretty rare to find hardcover editions of manga and I was just wondering what everyone else thought of the concept. It's looks really cool on my shelf, but perhaps it's not quite as convient for carrying with you.

I wouldn't buy it, because hardcovers cost too much. Unless there was something else to make the edition special, I'll stick with my regular paperbacks.

The low price was only because they were B&N exclusives, as a standard release they probably wouldn't be priced so low (definitely not lower than the softcover price). Personally I don't see an advantage to having them in hardcover, it's just for looks, for manga it's a novelty.

Yeah, you're probably right on that. I was just wondering, all things being equal (including price) would anyone be interested in hardcover manga volumes.

I actually have the Akira volume 1 in Hardcover, too. I got it for like 6 dollars because it was on clearance. I was floored. I also have the hardcover edition of Shirahime-Syo by CLAMP. I'm a die-hard CLAMP fan and just had to have it. Anime catgrin + sweatdrop And I also have the volume 1 limited edition Japanese version of Tsubasa. That was definitely just for fun, as I already own the series, but the hardcover version of it was just beautiful. I think that's all. But I actually think releasing stuff like the Omnibi that keep coming out in hardcover is a good idea. The same with MW. I only wish Ode to Kirihito would have been HC. When you have such thick spines, it makes it really hard to keep the paperback in top-notch condition. So, yeah, I'd buy hardcovers. Not all the time, but definitely for series that I had already enjoyed or knew that I would. Otherwise it is a huge investment.

I believe Viz Media released volume one of the brilliant war drama Adolf, by Osamu Tezuka. Drawn & Quarterly also released two volumes of Yoshiharu Tsuge's shorts in absolutely gorgeous hardcovers. And as previosuly mentioned, there's the special volume 1 of Akira. There's also Otomo's kid's book, Hipira, and Akira Club. Oh, not forgetting the other hardcover Tezuka manga, MW.
And apparently Tokyopop released a collection of the first three volumes of Battle Royale in hardcover too...
I personally wish more manga were hardcover, they're a lot less crease-prone and generally look a lot nicer...

I think releasing more manga in hardcover as limited editions would be a good idea. People that buy manga tend to do so as a hobby and even if they remain devoted to certain groups or series if a series they liked ran a small production of hardbound volumes of something they liked then they would sell out. If they put out a hardbound copy of Vagabond signed by Takehiko Inoue I tell you now that I'd run to stores to buy it.

Do you mean the Tatsumi works they put out, Pushman and Abandon the Old? Cause if you did mean they put out some Tsuge, I need to pick those up.

I don't do harcover, mainly for space convenience. Things seem to fit better without hardcovers, and I'm kind of a cheap bastard when it comes to manga anyway.

Christ, I'm a clutz. Yeah, I meant Tatsumi, I'm always mixing up the names... Thought not without reason, they're both old Gekiga manga-ka, and their first names sounds alike too.
I do wish they'd do some Tsuge soon though...

Lately I've been wondering whether to buy the Battle Royale hardcovers or not. There were rumors about lots of extra material in them, but I've also seen reviews that contradicts this. Tokyopop's sloppy translation is also intact, so I think I'll pass.

I have been thinking of buying the Fruits Basket books in hardcover since it's more than one volume together (which makes it cheaper). Still debating about that though.

I do have the hardcover verison of Tatsumi's works, Tezuka's MW , and Tezuka's Buddha. Honestly, if the work is going to be big like MW I prefer hardcover because it holds the pages better. And by big I mean 500+ pages. I wish Ode to Kirhito was in hardcover. The softcover is so flimsy for 800+ pages.

But I wouldn't want all manga to go hardcover because that's too friggin expensive! And really I already spend too much on manga as it is. Regular 200 page books can remain in softcover.
