Interesting topic over at Animenation.com. Apparently, someone works at a retailer and they just got some reservations for Vol 1 and 2 for Hunter X Hunter...
So it seems it's licensed.....maybe...but by who????? Here's the link: http://www.animenation.net/forums/showthread.php?t=209723 let the speculation begin |

i certainly hope its no bullshit. hxh is one if not my favorite shounen series. well if its true, its about time and this news makes my day.
i doubt it will be shown on US cable though since its a bit outdated in animation but nonetheless a great story. if all goes well then hopefully then it might give incentive to finish up the manga |

Well it'd be nice if it was true, but I don't think it is. I hate to be such a pessimist, but if it were licensed, we'd probably know about it. Someone would have announced it somwere.
Maybe he was reserving the R2 version? |

I agree. It wouldn't make sense not to announce anything. Especially a licensing of series of this caliber (and it's an SJ series, no less). |

i think Naruto has pretty much ruined Hunter X Hunter's chances abroad, i can't imagine who they would sell it to. still would be interesting if it's true though.

Hasn't it been licensed by FUNimation for a while now?

If it has, the encyclopedia makes no mention of it. |

Why would Naruto be the one "ruining" Hunter x Hunter's chances of being licensed? |

But if someone does have it, I'd bet on Viz -- it's Shounen Jump (I think), and I've seen Viz licenses in the past that become known via these low-key, indirect methods. |

The older looking one doesn't cut it eh? I would think it would be a great series to have over here, when it seems that the story has started to get back on track on the manga end.

Zalis: I doubt Viz would license it, because it's not an action-themed or fan fiction-spawning type of show, and that's the only anime the company's interested in nowadays.

That doesn't mean anything for the anime. It went off-air before Naruto even started. And the manga would be a risky investment with Togashi flaking all the time. |

@ Zoe: If I recall correctly, Viz is releasing the manga in English.

Well, Viz didn't seem to think so as they've been releasing it for nearly three years. I believe volume 17 just came out this month. |

If Naruto's heading toward the downslope in popularity (currently I feel the series hit its popularity peak earlier this year), even if it's not newer, it's time for something different but similar. I love the HXH manga and the anime is my 3rd favorite so I think the show would be well received if released on R1 DVD. Granted, Naruto DVDs aren't big sellers unless I'm mistaken, so we can't expect a miracle with Hunter X Hunter. Shounen Jump titles seem to have more predictability who's going to release their anime adaptation (Viz) but I think I'd like a company like Funi or Bandai release Hunter X Hunter. Regardless, I think Hunter X Hunter should only be a collections release (no singles). Anyone interested in buying it would more likely want to own the entire series, so I don't think any company should resort to trying to bleed money slowly from the consumer with single DVDs. I actually think it would hurt sales of it. They can reduce costs by devoting production to just one version only, and passing that savings to the consumer. If the collections turn a profit then perhaps a singles version could be given a try (kind of backwards but with this particular series I think it's the best approach).
