Question about Gurren Lagann's name

Why is it romanized with two Rs and Two Ns?

At first I thought t'was something the fansubbers came up with, but now it seems to be the official title...

I've gone through Gainax's website, but couldn't find anything...

Can anyone tell me the origin/meaning of the extra letters?

I don't know why, but that is the transliteration chosen by the makers, as evidenced by the URL of the official site:

http://www.gurren-lagann.net/

Usually, the official Japanese transliteration is respected, except when it comes to obvious misspellings of common English / French / German / Swahili words.
