We'll look into installing it after it's final. Our installation is heavily modded not just for added features, but in order to run the site proper, so we can't just scrap it and install something quite as easily as if the forum wasn't integrated with the encyclopedia and site. -t |

I'm sorry but I'm a total techincal noob and have no idea what any of this means. I understand PHPBB is the host server, one of anyway, that sites rent space, for lack of a better phrase, from to house their sites/forums/whatever else. Am I right so far? Assuming I am what would be the big difference in the new PHPBB version 3 and what is out now? Why could a site simply not just upgrade without there being problems?
For example; when I got on tonight Firefox had a message that I needed to update my eBay notice and color tabs. I simply update them as i would Firefox itself and bam it's all good. How come updating PHPBB isn't roughly the same? Obviously it would take longer but I simply don't get why it could negatively effect the Encyclopedia or other parts of the site. Like I said, technical noob. |

Not a single bit.
phpBB is the forum interface, not the "host server." Dan made quite a few customized tweaks, including (but not limited to) spoiler tags and bidirectional links between front page news items and Talkback forum threads, that are not included in the default, barebone "official" phpBB.
You've never tweaked the operating system of your own computer, have you? I don't think you've even used the about:config function to fine tune your Firefox. If you want to keep those customized functions, you have to reinstall and/or reconfigure them after the upgrade, and in worse cases the original plug-in may not be compatible with the newer version of phpBB and requires its code rewritten and tested before reinstallation. Every step takes quite some time.
No offense, but if you consider yourself a tech noob I suggest you DO NOT make analogies like "why can't [procedure A] work like [procedure B]?" This type of analogies are sometimes quite offending to tech personnel. |

So if Tempest simply straight up upgraded to the new version all the added extras that Dan or others have done would be lost and have to be done all over again? If that's the case I can see why that would pose a problem to say the least.
No and No. I can turn the computer on, do basic run of the mill things but that's about it. Some stuff like that may be simple in nature perhaps (not sure if it is or isn't honestly) but it's not every day stuff so out of my expertise. My gf is the computer, more specifically computer systems security, major not me. I study criminals and bake food heh.
I don't see how they might be offending but considering I have no expertise in the field I'll take your word on it and keep it in mind for the future. |

Meh, not really offending. Amusing, possibly.
I'm not in any hurry to install phpbb3. 1) I expect it will take a long time before all the mods we used for this forum are available for v3 (heck, I don't even remember all the mods we added) 2) new software is usually riddled with minor bug, bad bugs, major bug, and security bugs 3) there are no significantly compelling features 4) don't fix it if it ain't broken |

Early adoption vs. late adoption.
As a tech geek, I'm generally an early-adopter, but when it comes to anything work-related (at ANN, or at my former NetAdmin job) I prefer to be a late-adopter simply because it's safer. Dan's right that there are no major features in the new phpBB that make it worth rushing to an upgrade. There's a lot of nice features in the new version that I look forward to, but none of them are anything we need urgently (or even need at all), so we'll wait till 1) we don't have other more important priorities, 2) everyone else has already discovered and fixed the bugs in phpBB3 and 3) all the mods we require are available for phpBB3. -t |
