Viz said that the SigIKKI line was specifically for mature audiences. Censoring children's comics is one thing, but this is extremely disappointing. Like many others, I simply pray that Viz never licenses anything I have an interest in. |

I really hope that Viz doesn't end up soliciting the sort of backlash that CMX did with Tenjho Tenge. I'd really hate to see that happen, and end up hurting yet another manga distributor.

Not cool, but on the other hand I can understand why they did it. That's a pretty controversial scene and even the cropped version might yet elicit the shitstorm Viz was obviously hoping to avoid. It's a no win situation.
More fuel to the fire for 'OMG, boycott Viz forever!!!' crowd then. I'm not quite that steep, but I am debating whether I should boycott this particular volume on principle or not

Was the actual book edited, can anyone confirm? If it's just the free chapters on the SigIkki site, I don't care. There's no way for them to verify the ages of people looking at those, so I can see why they'd censor, much like Funimation does with their free streams. DVDs/books should be uncensored though. There's no excuse for that.

I'd rather have a Kitoh manga from Viz with a handful of edits than a Kitoh manga from Dark Horse that gets dropped altogether.
If the edits screw up the narrative or the flow of the page, they're a problem. If not, I'm really not all that bothered. |

Yeah, I can't honestly say that anything of value was actually lost by having that particular scene cropped. Still, it's the principle of the thing, hence my dilemma. |

Recall a similar issue with censorship happening with Kitoh's earlier work Narutaru from Dark Horse where a few scenes in volume 7 were either edited or cut from the American release due to violent or sexual content involving the same type of characters. But it seemed unlike Bokurano's case, Dark Horse was totally unaware of the darker direction Narutaru was going at the time. Considering how a majority of Americans are still squeamish over sexual themes involving minors at that age, it doesn't surprise me the particular scene with spoiler[one of Mako's bullies] was edited. I imagine the act itself was still discussed in Viz's release of the chapter, am I right?
EDIT: Never mind, just went to check the chapter itself. Looks like they only spoiler[show the girl from the waist up with the act implied.] It doesn't effect the volume's narrative yet I see the Viz manga haters having more flames to spew. |

I hate to say this, but if they're going to be editing stuff, it's really going to just make scanlations stick around longer because they're not edited. Can't you just shrink wrap this stuff and call it a day, Viz? You're willing to shrink wrap Detroit Metal City because it says the f-word a lot but not leave Bokurano 2 unedited and just shrink wrap that for having sex scenes? WTF, Viz? That just sounds illogical to me.
And as far as I can guess, Tokyopop didn't edit the panels on Battle Royale and that's way worse than the sex scene in Bokurano 2 (both in terms of sex and violence, I'm guessing it's not edited because it's still pretty damn graphic), Tokyopop shrink wrapped it, done, no need to compromise the artwork and the authors original art intention. And that's actually my main thing about this, it's the fact that it compromises the original artwork and by association original intention of the author and if you're gonna bring over someone's artwork, I can think of few ruder things to do to it. |

If the censorship is online-only, then it doesn't bother me. But what's the point of making a special line for mature titles if you're going to censor them?
I get that the scene in question doesn't really affect the story, but its the principle that matters. If its a mature line, then the mature readers can handle it. |

I'm not sure but I think the problem was that the censorship was due to sexual relations involving a minor. From what I read of the plot one of the teenage pilots was molested by her teacher and got pregnant. Personally, I don't get what the big deal is since it doesn't sound like pandering fanservice. Plus, it's meant for a mature audience so it's not likely any kids will read it. I think Viz is just being paranoid and of course, there's that whole knee-jerk reactionism to anything that might be interpreted as child porn.
Yeah, I know it's just a precaution and it's supposedly not relevant to the story. And we should all be just thankful it was licensed and we need to support the industry, and so on...But think about the few times we've heard about people getting upset about manga, what kind of manga where usually involved? Popular, mainstream stuff often found in schools and public libraries. Bokurano doesn't sound like something kids and young teens would be reading. Plus, manga is extremely niche; there's a good chance no one will ever notice. The local Waldenbooks that went out of business in my town had BL and yaoi mixed in with the regular manga. The shrink wrap was often ripped off; it was an incident waiting to happen but nothing ever did or at least I never heard about it. I'm not even sure the clerks checked the ratings or asked for ID. Of course, the problem is graphic novels/comics/manga are held to a different standard than prose novels. Mainly because most Americans still think comics are just for kids. I like what you said about many people still feeling that comics are just for kids. I see this all too often at the library. Some of the libraries I go to will just put any graphic novel collection in the kid's section. Eventually, parents complain when they see it, and there's a large backlash against manga as well as western comics.
I'm sure I've mentioned before that it's ended up where the library's anime club is only allowed to accept individuals under 18, and has to severely limited the series they're permitted to screen. Sorry to get a bit off topic. |

Actually, spoiler[the storyline involved one of the teen pilots having a mother who was a prostitute and she was normally teased by girl bullies because of it. But just before her battle, she noticed one of the bullies engaging in intercourse with an older man when rescuing the two revealing the bully as a hypocrite.] |

No, it's right on topic, vashna. It's something that's always bothered me. It's one of the main reasons manga is still niche; it's because everyone keeps promoting this idea that only kids and teens read manga. I read where they recently started a "Women Reading Comics" day and women posted pics of themselves reading comics. There was some manga included but I think it needs it own separate day.

I don't think I'll ever understand this "It doesn't affect the story!" apologetics. Like I said on the Mania thread:
There's more to manga than just the story. If I went to see the opera Tosca and every piece of music or singing was cut while the actors just read the lyrics, it wouldn't effect the story. But I'd still want the money for my ticket back. And if Viz released a manga with every single piece of art blacked over and just the word panels remaining, even if doesn't affect the story, there's no way I'd buy that.
Someone who had the print version in their hands said that it was.
I believe in supporting the industry when it does things right, not when it does things wrong. |
