Shouldn't that be "given name" and not surname? I'm pretty sure surname is the last/family name. And Ace went with "Portgas" because it's his mom's family name.

Well...Thank God it wasn't Portgas.

Ace isn't that common on these shores, either, though it does pop up from time to time. Especially with dogs.

That kid will grow up to be bad-ass.
Parenting, she's doing it right.

It's funny that Japan even has rules on what regular names a child can have. Laughing

I think, plenty of countries have that or used to have it until recently (France and Germany f.ex.). Japan is actually one of the countries where parents can chose and create names quite freely.

Something we should do to keep things like Pilot Inspektor from happening.

Or something as silly as Moxie Crimefighter.. yes that is a child's real name. You can thank Penn Jillette from Penn and Teller for that. What is this world coming to? Although Ace really is not all that strange of a name.

Weird names. I love that topic. Years ago there was a news clip here about a mother who named his son Tamiya after the toy car. That kid's probably in grade school now, I wonder what he thinks. Parents have so much power over their children.

I don't find Ace to be a strange name. But if its not common and kind of difficult to pronounce in Japan, I can see the problem. Hope this works out for the kid. Better than many other names out there that parents name their kids.

I'm pretty sure that all of the One Piece names are written in Western order.

In your section of the world maybe. Consider this, Said is a very common name in some parts of the world but it would be strange name that stands out on most non-Middle Eastern class rosters.
I am more interested in what names are officially banned though.
