Has anyone watched Niea_7. I read about it a long time ago, but forgot about it until i stumbled upon a story I wrote years ago titled Neia_8. (note the subtle differences). I just wondered if anyone has seen it or can tell me if it's worth watching. I love Lain, so it wouldn't be a strectch to find it likeable.

Niea is NOTHING like Lain. Really...nothing. Not scene direction, not mood, not story. Obviously, there are some design similarities, but that's it. As for the review, I don't think Niea_7 is so much about getting along with others as it is about Mayuko discovering herself. She explores her own ambitions, or lack thereof, her attachments to her childhood, her attachment to her present lifestyle, etc. etc. A big theme is how quickly reality can sink in and be accepted as everyday life, and how awkward, or painful it can be when you realize part of that everyday life has to disappear. It's a slow paced slice of life comedy, and the general mood is melancholy.
I would say about 2/3 of the episodes seem to have something to say about Mayuko or Niea, while 1/3 of them are random and thrown in only for humor. Wait so you've never seen niea_7, but you wrote a story with a title based off its name? |

Niea, Lain and Haibane-Renmei aren't really that similar to one another, but they all share the common trait of being extremely good shows that go well beyond the norm for creating an interesting world and interesting characters. Lain, as you know, is a psychological thriller and Haibane is pure drama. Niea starts out very comedic with the title character's incessant complaining, random bizarreness and lots of slapstick for good measure. As the show moves on, it becomes quite a bit more serious touching on many different themes. It's my least favorite of the three, but only marginally as I gave all of them an "excellent" rating.
The show also shares the esteemed distinction of being only one of two shows for which I have created a discussion thread for.  The thread's only useful if you've already seen the show though.

It could've been a coincidence when he wrote it, depending on when he first heard of NieA_7 and when he wrote his story. Even if it wasn't, he could've simply found the title interesting, and ran with whatever idea he came up with it. |

This was a really nice series but beware the ending. I won't spoil it for you but I was let down a bit because there were a lot of unanswered questions at the end and it was an abrupt conclusion. Still, it's one of my favorite anime from the creative team of Texnolize, Lain, and Haibane Renmei. If you like that art style and the quirky plots of the previous shows, you will probably like this one.

There are a lot of unanswered questions, but after the spoiler[Mother Ship disappeared] I kind of realized they would never answer spoiler[How Niea and Mayu met, how the ship landed, etc].
As for the spoiler[Bath house, a lot of people say its an unanswered question, but I feel like it was decided that it would be sold. I mean some of Mayu's last words were "we'll try to make the best of what time we have left here."] I don't think it was abrupt though, the setup to the conclusion was like 2 or 3 episodes, ever since spoiler[The bath house was going to be sold, and the mother ship disappeared] I felt the series was kind of chugging to its close. |

You know- I hadn't thought of it that way before.
Keeping in mind that I am known for overanalysis: spoiler[So we've got NieA, who is kind of representing the child in Mayuko, and the mother ship, from which NieA came. And then they start talking about selling the bath house, which Mayuko's family used to own. So the tie to her parents is essentially going to vanish, causing her childhood to go away, and the mothership disappears taking NieA temporarily with it, until Mayuko seems to get that it's ok to hold onto aspects of childhood and let others go. NieA comes back, the mother ship and the bath house go.] I dunno, I'm still working with that one. I don't think it's so much unanswered questions as it is distilled to the necessary, if that makes sense. Just what we needed to know, and the rest are just details, leading back to simplicity, like Mayuka was looking for. |

I always thought of Niea as at first, a direct contrast to Mayuko. She was everything Mayuko wasn't, or the very least, was trying not to be. Mayuko is constantly searching for direction in the series, and Niea is directionless. Because Mayuko's actual childhood is very rarely elaborated on, I never thought of her as a representation of childhood. Everyone always comments on how "free" Niea seems, which indicates to me that she is more of a lifestyle contrast. spoiler[It's apparent by the end though that Mayuko isn't necessarily ready to give up her current, unambitious lifestyle. I also don't think the bath house is so much a connection to her parents because she gets along fine with her mother and they speak casually on the phone. Mayuko does realize the kind of history the bath house and her have, and it makes her realize to what degree that bath house is her home, but because Niea_7 seriously focuses on Mayuko's current life, and portrays it in a somewhat carefree manner, I think what she's really attached to is what the bath house is right now, with kotomi, the burner guy, and the old lady. Otherwise, you would think she would have more fits of nostalgia, and the only serious nostalgia i can remember being shown is when Mayuko remembers her old stories after Genzo reminds her. So I think the bath house being sold impacts her more because it's taking away her current life, and not her childhood.]
As for the mothership and Niea spoiler[disappearing, I think they just serve to illustrate the point that's mentioned very often: Freaky things like Aliens and spaceships quickly become part of everyday life, and no one even notices anymore. They become so ingrained that if they were to disappear, it would really leave a hole, which mayuko mentions as the space ship disappears, and I can only infer that her life had that same kind of feeling when Niea was gone.][/spoiler] |

Musshi is right. I saw the ad for it in a mag, had a story do, and liked the title. Also, my non-existant affinity for title-writing, I changed it.
