I finished GTO late sunday night and loved this series.
I loved the end of the ongoing Miyabe story arc with the story why she hates teachers and the past. It makes a lot of sense and I guess she isn't THAT much of a grade A+ bizznatch. Maybe just a C+.
Anyway the ending when Onizuka is riding his bike and is in America. and now teaching at California junior high was okay. But theres no explained reason why he did. It seemed like a rush in a good way but still. Kinda cool to see an OVA about it though. Onizuka in america!
Here's a question about the Kanzaki story arc. What is the secret that her old teacher fujiohshi said in class and is referenced too a few times?
It drove me nuts never hearing that!

The secret revealed by Fujimori was that Kanzaki's mother had conceived her by artificial insemination, presumably using sperm from a highly intelligent donor -- a non-Japanese (probably American), explaining her blond hair. Being a half-breed test-tube baby is plenty of grounds for social ostracism in Japan..

WOW! I didn't know that was a looked down upon thing. I just always thought she was a just mixed or that the creators love blonde two tone eyed chickas.
I mean being a half is pretty much looked down everywhere but i didn't think Test tubers were too.
Thanks again for the knowledge Abunai!

I don't think artificial insemination is a matter of public disdain (it is so common, these days, after all), but in terms of social relations between kids it's another matter. We all know how much pressure there is to conform in any group of people, especially teens, and especially Japanese. Anything that sets you apart makes you a target.
As for the other half of the equation -- half-breeds. Be they of whatever kind, I personally find them better-looking than purebreeds, as a (very) general rule of thumb. Perhaps it's the exoticism of foreign traits combined with the familiarity of native looks.
At any rate, it is indisputably true that half-breeds are discriminated against in Japan.... though many Japanese will agree that half-breeds are good-looking but less "durable" than "proper" Japanese. One relevant quotation of sorts: "Halfs are so good-looking.... but they don't age well." (I believe I read this in a Japanese novel, but I can't at the moment recall the source, so take it with a grain of salt).

I just finished watching GTO yesterday myself. I really enjoyed the anime.
Being a teacher myself I admired Onizuka's determination to help his pupils and his strong desire to turn their attitudes around and make school more fun and interesting for them, even if his methods were shall we say, a little unorthodox and often borderline illegal.
I rated it as Masterpiece as I really think it had everything required for a perfect anime (well except the absence of Giant robots but I'll forgive it that much).
I've decided to dig out Salaryman Kintaro and see if it's any good as it shares the biker gang leader goes straight idea.

If you didn't find the anime ending satisfactory you could try the manga, since its ending was less abrupt than the anime's and if you were a fan of Urumi, the manga expands on her story and there's also an alternative telling to what drove Miyabi to hate teachers.

Yes, I would definitely recommend reading all 25 volumes of the manga as well. It provides more depth, and goes into more detail regarding Yoshikawa and Anko's relationship as well as introducing several characters that were not in the anime version.
In addition, you may also want to check out the "prequels" Shonan Junai Gumi, of which 4 volumes are currently available for purchase from your local retailer, and another side story called "Bad Company" which I've only been able to find a scanlation of.
Enjoy.
Oh, and if you do end up checking out the manga, the later volumes like 6+ or something all have a section featuring hilarious quotes by GTO himself (who I nominated for Best Male Anime Character, by the way )

Thanks for telling me about the manga! I think I'll try it after all. I was a bit overwhelmed before because there's so many volumes. But it seems to be worth it. I'll collect a few at a time.
I going to need more shelves....again!

Cool, good luck. You will enjoy the series.
I believe Borders Books and Music will occasionally do a buy 3 get 4th one free type deal regarding (tokyopop) manga so that should work to your advantage if you want to check with them.

I liked the show. The ending truly annoyed me though. Not the final episode, but the last like 20% of the entire anime. Students do this, students do that, we find out about a problem, Onizuka pops in the episode for 2 minutes. It felt way too centered on the kids by the end of the series.
Sure, it was kind of interesting and funny there at the end, but Onizuka is SUCH a strong character I wanted to see him way more.
I've heard great things about the live action series, maybe you should give that a try.
Forget what I rated this...7 or 8...I think 8. Avatar is Onizuka mainly because I thought that was a great picture more than me loving the series. But it's definitely up top.

Yeah, the live action series was decently entertaining. I believe it is 13 episodes long... and there might have been like 2 or 3 full length movies as well.

12 episodes, one TV special, and a very crappy movie to be exact.
Anyway, I gave both the anime and TV series a Masterpiece. Onizuka is one of those very charismatic guys that has a way of dealing with people, and I love the chemistry he develops with everyone. The balance of comedy and drama just felt perfect throughout the entire series, and I'm looking forward to collecting all the manga someday as well.
In terms of the anime, this also made Wataru Takagi one of my top comedy seiyuu. Ever since hearing him as Onizuka, I've never forgotten his voice and look forward to any character he's casted as.
I just wish Tokyopoop did a better job of DVD authoring, because they've got some very bad video quality on their DVDs .

I also have GTO the series rated Masterpiece. It was definitely a show that became one of my true favorites. I still remember how fun it was to get to know Onizuka and thinking that with each passing episode it was sort of like getting to know a friend. The character development is very much my favorite part of the show.
I still haven't seen the Live action series yet but I am still slowly getting through the manga.

I wonder if Funi did anything at all to their release of the series. This is a show I wouldn't mind buying again (I could always sell off my tokyopop boxes) if the quality is any better in the new release.
