IGN just had an article at IGN on taking sides at:
http://dvd.ign.com/articles/804/804901p1.html I would love to see Samurai 7, which was mastered in HD on Blu-Ray. I would also love to see the Gonzo titles like Trinity Blood, Basilisk, and Speed Grapher get new HD transfers, especially since the standard definitions were less than stellar. Fullmetal Alchemist would also be a hit in HD. Of course Sony has already sided exclusively with Blu-ray, so don't expect to see the Bebop Movie, Memories, Steam Boy, Metropolis, Advent Children, or Tokyo Godfathers on HDDVD. Disney has gone exclusive so all the Ghibli films will be on Blu-Ray only. Anchor Bay who I believe owns Manga Entertainment also went Blu. They have Noein, Karas, Tokko, Perfect Blue, Ninja Scroll, and Macross Plus. That with the fact that HD-DVD is getting pounded by Blu-Ray in Japan seems to point to Blu-Ray for anime despite Freedom's HD-DVD only release. Ironically enough the standard definition layer of Freedom wouldn't play on my HD-DVD player or my standard definition player, but it did play on my PS3! I have nothing against HD-DVD and actually can play the new audio formats through the 6 cable on my Toshiba, but not on my PS3. It just looks like Blu-Ray will win over more anime titles. I also posted this on another thread, but is there any reason to buy BVUSA's Blu-Ray and HD-DVD releases, since they are the same price as the Japanese versions which are the same region code, include the English tracks, and are released earlier? Bandai Visual Japan is releasing a ton of Blu-Ray and HD-DVD titles in the next couple of months, while the first BVUSA release which is $80 isn't coming out until September. |

I was wondering when the media shift will happen for anime.
I personally wont go out and get a blu ray until its super sure that the majority of anime companies will switch over to blu ray or HDDVD. but i heard on G4 that blu ray was really winning the fight. I do hope that when the companies do switch they would put all their anime they put out ever on the new media. Plus how mant eps can you fit on a blu ray disc and if its waaaayyyy too expensive for that disc....im going to be a DVD girl for a long time.
im definetly waiting for those since ADV has a super huge catalog of my faves. but...think about it. When all anime goes to a high def disc all dvds will start to be dirt cheap and we can rank in the benfits of discounted anime. the same thing happened with VHS when anime on DVD was blown up. |

I am also waiting for the whole HD DVD vs. Blu-Ray to die down. It is sort of like the old VHS vs. BETA Max inthe 80's. My cousin bought BETA when they first came out only to find out that they would start using VHS over BETA.

The writer of that article doesn't seem to realize there is a difference between Bandai Visual USA and Bandai Enterntainment.
Regardless, there was some interesting stuff in there, especially concerning FUNimation, but I'm wondering why IGN thought Bandai Visual USA has chosen HD-DVD. It seems to me they're supporting both Blu-Ray and HD-DVD, but have sort of randomly chosen which titles will be on which format. ![]() Anyway, I'm looking forward to the follow-up article! |

Thanks Randall for posting this article, had no clue that Funimation had a caught the blue bug.
If you are planning on getting a PS3 in the future I suggest doing it sooner rather then later seeing as how the 60GB model will be gone soon and it's going to be replaced by the 80GB model. What's the difference you ask? About a 100 dollars and more the 80GB won't play all of your old Playstation (1 and 2) game. Actually I don't think that were actually in need of a format change really, sure were getting better quality but most people can't even take advantage of the better quality. When everyone is forced to upgrade their TV(either tuner or new TV) because of no more Analog signal that when Blue Ray will really take off. |

Is the blu-ray or HD-DVD player compatible with regular DVD's?
Is it legal for a company to produce a dual format player that does both? Basically I do not want a change in system making my current anime dvd's unplayable, as chances are I wont re buy them and will merely stick to getting a good laptop (as chances are one of those will be able to do everything) |

Neither HD-DVD or Blue Ray can be played in a DVD player. You have to get new hardware Blue Ray player (aka PS3) or an HD-DVD player. Also some laptop have blue ray player (certain companies) and other companies have HD-DVD in their computer. I believe a hybrid HD-DVD/Blue Ray player is suppose to be out by the end of this year. Also HD-DVD have the DVD version of movie on the flipside, sometimes. |

This is why I hope they go with HD-DVD... an HD-DVD player plays both HD and normal DVD's. |

I'm not taking a side just yet, I'll wait and see where ADV goes. If ADV goes Blu-Ray, I'll go Blu-Ray. If ADV goes HD-DVD, I'll go HD-DVD. Where they go, I'll follow.
Let me get this straight - I can't play regular DVDs in a Blu-Ray or HD-DVD player? |

No, that is incorrect. You can play regular DVDs on either a Blu-Ray(Not required to do so, however IIRC all have) or HD-DVD Player. So lets say you buy a PS3, you can play your regular DVDs and CDs on it(However not all Blu-Ray players support CD play), and the same goes for HD-DVD Players. Both for now atleast, are backwards compatible.

They really should remain that way, it is still a digital medium so it shoul retain the ability to play regular DVD's as a matter of course, if it becomes the norm for one system or the others players to not be reverse compatible then I sure as hell wont be buying that system...

The only reason Blu-Ray outsells HD-DVD is because there aren't any games on the PS3. The X Box 360 rpgs from Sakaguchi could tip the balance in Japan.

You know you don't have to re-buy all your dvd since BluRay and HdDVD player will play your regular DVD. However, you will future proof your equipment so once Blu-Ray and HDDVD become mainstream, nobody is gonna be buying regular DVD anymore.
Even if Xbox sales goes up, nobody is really buying the HDDVD add on anyways beside the super hardcore fan. Plus their games are still on regular DVD disc. I know that Microsoft got killer game, but not including a HDDVD player is holding me back since PS3 is a better value. |

I know, but the thing is that... it's high-definition! And I can't bear looking at my collection when much better (not always mind you) versions of my Dvd(s) are out there. |
