FIVE THOUSAND?! A lot of these companies are worth billions of dollars, and all they could donate was $5,000. Even Bill Gates paid for scholarships which were worth more than that.

For a private non-profit school, that a nice amount of money. Besides, they were problely asked before hand on what is a fair amount.

Here's their webpage: http://www.zionprep.org/ Enrollment at that school costs $2500/yr. Student attendence is 552 students. CIS (the group that gave the check) on average spends about $37.33 per child they assist (750k kids, $28 million USD, according to their 2000-2001 report, unless i'm misreading it). Their school probably already receives funding from CIS, so this $5000 is "above and beyond" what they already may receive.. $5000/552 = $9.05/student... or, about a 25% increase. While it might not look like a significant amount of money, if those numbers are correct, then it probably was a significant increase over what the school normally received from CIS. plus it gave the kids something interesting to do for the day. :) |
