I couldn't find a thread about Infinite Ryvius, so I thought I'd make one.
As my user name implies, I'm obviously a huge fan of this series. This series had a lot of interesting characters, ad the suspense made me go through half the entire series in one viewing before I realized it. It was intersting to see spoiler[the entire ship fall apart slowly in an attempt to re-establish control.] Any other Ryvius fans here? |

There is a thread, but it's not exactly what you'd call an in-depth discussion.
For the most part, I really enjoyed the series. Strong character development and a twisting plot kept the show interesting, but it's the struggle between the different ideals and perspectives of the characters that makes the show so good. Watching Kouji try to hang on to his high-minded principles in the face of his brother's, Ikumi's and Team Blue's own way of doing things as everything around spiraled into chaos had me questioning what I would do, even as an adult, if caught in a similar situation. It's been praised a lot for its more realistic depictions of space travel, and though Goro Taniguchi would one-up himself with Planetes in that regard, it's still nice to see another show that doesn't take the Star Wars approach of throwing science books out the window. Though the Vital Guarder did seem rather out-of-place, much like Neya, I guess that was the point--to distinguish the fantastical from the realistic. |

Infinite Ryvius is a highly excellent series. I decided to check it out from the trailer that was included on one of my Scryed DVDs, which along with Planetes was by the same director. All three series are very good, though Planetes would be my favorite of the lot. Bandai really makes good trailers and the Infinite Ryvius one really made the series look interesting.
One thing I really liked about the series that hasn't been mentioned yet was the music. It had a really nice soundtrack, too bad no companies have tried to import the CDs. I was only able to get ahold of the first one. |

I was rather disappointed in Infinite Ryvius. I liked the beginning, thought some of the middle was good, but felt the last third just fell apart. Putting my finger on it, I guess I feel the writers couldn't decide if they wanted a political drama aimed at the Lord of the Flies crowd (I'll admit to picking Ryvius up because I'm a big LOTF fan and read the many reviews comparing the two) or a teen drama aimed at a younger viewership.
spoiler[I also thought the fact that half of these kids turned out having been messed up to begin with took away from the whole point of the story (alright - maybe one or two kids could have been a little off at the start, but eventually almost half the ship???) Finally, I found the OMG-it's going-to-happen-all-over-again ending more than a little tacky and the group merrily going off again, including some members who should have been in deep therapy instead, completely unrealistic.] In spite of a few good moments, all in all it was a take it or leave it title to me. |

I enjoyed watching Mugen no Ryvius, 'twas well played indeed. I really liked the mysterious girl in pink who randomly popped outta no where, strange but interesting. The music played a big part I think. The hip-hop inspired ST was a good choice. Another series I found kind of like this is Starship Operators, has the same kind of story but has mostly female main characters and an awesome ending/opening theme.

I love the abundance of extras that were on the Bandai releases. Some of those web animations are so funny.
Overall I didn't enjoy it anywhere near as much as Planetes, or even Gene Shaft or Starship Operators which it reminds me of. The ending spoiler[seemed rather anti-climactic, since everything was patched up between the characters so nicely] The fact that I'm getting really tired of Hisashi Hirai's designs also doesn't help. I think Kelly's point is what I am agreeing on as well. I just couldn't get over the teenage light drama. Granted Starship Operators has it's share of teen romance, but for some reason it didn't bother me as much. There is also the fact that I never felt as though the core characters in Ryvius ever felt as they were in peril spoiler[ compared to most of the other series that I mention in this thread which have some key characters dying throughout the series.] |

Mugen no Ryvius was the best. it's in my top 5 favorite shows. I wish they'd send the kids back up there or something. I would have loved to see more
