So they're going to get their American branches to screw up the U.S. releases of their shows for them now? Rolling Eyes

Hmm i don't know. I found that article confusing, are Toei still trying to estabilish a way of releasing anime directly into the US?

I see this as a good thing! Mot Toei shows have gotten pretty bad treatment after being brought over by other companies. Maybe if they begin to do their own stuff, it might turn out better.

Who knows until they actually put something out that isnt Digimon and appeals to a broader audiance.

I think they should start by buying out Bo^7 from Illumitoon and starting over with better quality everything.

geishageek: you're forgetting that Toei have tried to put out DVD releases of series they own in the US, and the result was more or less a disaster. Subsequently, no one can screw up Anime like the Japanese. This overall isn't a good thing but I won't go and whine yet, or ever really. Doesn't work.

I have strong indications we will see Dragonball Z return. But I hope they have more than that planned.

I don't mean to be disrespectful, but what rock have you been living under? Most Toei shows have had good dvd releases in the US when a company like 4Kids wasn't the primary licensor. They didn't take a downward slide until Toei started interfering and trying to release the stuff themselves. Bobo is a result of Toei interference. Illumitoon only released what Toei handed them to release. Air Master, Slam Dunk, and that other one shot they released themselves were some of the worst dvds ever put out in America regardless of genre, mirroring all the problems Bobo has had.

To TV or.....DBZ has returned, funimation has starting releasing season box set for DBZ, the first one is already out and the second one is on it's way.

As for Toei, thinks can go worse then last time right? I mean perhaps Airmaster and Slam Dunk could be completed, or are they here just to sell Digimon to Disney.

I think they're just focusing on mainstream, kid-friendly, T.V. anime. I could see them licensing other stuff down the road, perhaps by themselves or with another company. By the way, can someone please tell me what exactly was wrong with their R1 DVDs?

And I can't to hear their plans for "Pretty Cure".

Here we go again? So they're going to try again?

Does this means a possible continuation for 'Air Master'? Nah, well if that happens they should hire some people that know how to gawdamn sub. Sheesh!!! Wonder if 'Pretty Cure' will finally make it here? Man what the hell happened to that project?

I don't give a damn about the Anime. I seriously want Toei to release more of their Kamen Rider, Metal Hero, and Super Sentai properties here. I really want them to release Tokkyuu Shirei Solbrain and Blue SWAT. Bad enough they only have Kikaida and Kamen Rider V3 released here and they butchered alot of footage for VR Troopers, Big Bad Bettleborgs, and Power Rangers.

You can pretty much bet it won't be anything good. Edited and released on tv for a mainstream children's audience, since that seems to be their primary focus going on what's in that article. What a waste. They have mentioned PreCure, btw, in another article and that they planned on getting it out here (after Geneon releases Nanoha). I can only hope we don't get another Illumitoon mess if they do attempt an unedited release.

Crawly, I haven't been living under any rock. That notion just slipped my mind at the time I posted. I remembered only after I posted and didn't get a chance to edit what I said. I've been at work all day.

The presentations of the dvd's they released wasn't all that bad. They just didn't promote anything and so they made less money and quality slipped for what they did put out.

The anime scene has changed a great deal since they were releasing their own titles and maybe they will change their strategy this time around. Maybe not. Won't know until I see it.

Steven: I wouldn't whine either if things go badly again. It's just how it is. But I do hope they change the way they do things. One can dream, if only for a bit.

You're remembering things badly. The dvds were bad from the start and early reviews nailed them for it, which is what caused the poor sales and canceled pre-orders. The subtitles were the biggest problem and were never corrected. The dialog edits were unnecessary and alienated a lot of people. No chapter stops and hitting the main menu after each episode played were annoyances. The video and Japanese audio were good, but that's about the only thing good you could say about the discs. If you watched the dub, you weren't as bad off, though those dubs were pretty bad, too.

It hasn't been that long (just about 2 years), and things haven't changed that much. And given the current Illumitoon situation, which is basically mirroring what happened with Toei and can't be a coincidence, I'd say they haven't really improved at all and are continuing to cause problems.

Now, I'm not a Toei hater. I think if they'd just go back to licensing they way they used to all would be fine. They need to stop trying to eliminate the middle man, though. Or else get a much better grasp on the R1 market if they want to do it themselves (in regards to anime fans, the kiddie market is a whole different subject).

The anime secene has changed a huge deal in 2 years. But that isnt the point.

Back in the day, I was not into fancy art boxes and extras (and besides they were so few) so I guess those releases never bothered me. They have their special place on my shelve next to my fansubbed VHS tapes.

And your right. Toei does need a middle man. But with the right marketing they could do what needs to be done alone. I happen to like shows aimed at little kids (I'm 24 mind you) and if Toei is willing to try to bring some of their shows over I am all for it, albeit that the shows are worth watching.

So much crap is coming over from other companies now, aimed at the younger audience. I miss the good ol days of the original Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh! Ah well. Maybe in the next two years things will be less saturated with crap.
