Although I have liked anime for a little over a year now, I haven't read 1 manga. Once I get allowence from my mom (I'm a teenager, so dont ask "you still live with your mom?") I want to go to Barns and Noble and buy a manga. Which should I start with first? I like Eureka Seven, Full Metal Alchemist, Naruto, One Piece, Gundam series, Bleach, Ghost in the Shell, Samauri Shamploo, and some others.

To give the standard reply, checking out the manga counterparts to the anime you like is a pretty safe first choice. You might not like them as much but in most cases the manga is considered better by the majority of fans so definitely that's where I would start you. Also, check out the Shounen Jump line because your tastes definitely fall within that category.

I agree with marie-antoinette, although you might want to pass up Ghost in the Shell....it has some *ahem* "adult situations" that might get you in trouble with those parents you still live with. But Bleach, Naruto, and One Piece seem to be good introductory titles, and they're also CHEAP, at only $8 a piece (vs. $10 for most manga). Give 'em a try and see what you think!
PS I would avoid the manga for both Gundam and Samurai Champloo, as in those cases the anime came first and the manga aren't nearly as good. |

I wouldn't be the expert, but I've also heard that the Fullmetal Alchemist manga goes in a completely different direction from the anime, so you might find that interesting. It's also still ongoing, I believe.

I'd go with what marie-antoinette said. The manga counterparts to your favorite anime is always a good start. In fact, that's how I got my manga collection started.
Just as a thought, you might try and talk your parents into giving you a subscription to Shonen Jump as some sort of present. It will expand your manga knowledge and you'd be able to save your allowance to buy novels that have caught your interest. |

Actually, I generally extend this rule to any manga that is derived from an anime. Most of the time, I find that such re-tellings really don't offer much in terms of originality, character development, or simply lacks the charm that I found in the anime. In other words, unless the mangaka puts forth an effort to distinguish their work from something I've already seen, such titles don't tend to hold my interest. |

I agree with everyone on the Shonen Jump titles. Naruto is a personal favorite of mine and I highly recommend it. Bleach and One Piece are also great and you might find Black Cat, D.Gray-man, and Death Note to your liking as well.
But don't avoid Mobile Suit Gundam: Ecole du Ciel. I wouldn't recommend it as a "first" series but it's definitely one to look into later. |

I suggest going down to your local library and ask if they carry manga. If they do, sit down and read the first volumes of different series of different genres. It's free and you can get a good cross section that way. If they don't carry it, then head down to the local book store and check out the first chapters of a few titles. I'm normally against reading in the book store, but reading the first chapter of books won't damage them too much, and you can get an idea of the series and decide if you want to buy it. The idea that was suggested of getting a subscription to Shonen Jump magazine was a good idea too.

I'd recommend the FullMetal Alchemist manga since it is vastly different from the anime.
If you usually watch Naruto and Bleach on Cartoon Network, the manga may be nice because they are either ahead of Cartoon Network (Bleach) or will soon pass up Cartoon Network (Naruto when they start releasing 3 volumes a month later this year). Just be warned that Naruto is well over 30 volumes in Japan and Bleach is almost 30 volumes and neither looks to be ending anytime soon, so collecting those will be big investments.
In the case of Gundam manga, spin-offs may be decent or good (like Ecole du Ciel, the Astray series, or Gundam Wing: Episode Zero) but the adaptations are horrible. |

When you say "adult situations" does that mean blood? Because my mom doesnt give a crap about blood. But nudity might get me in a bit of a bind. |

The first volume of the Ghost in the Shell manga has one sex scene in it. It's only like 2-3 pages, but it's so graphic that even makes me a little squeamish, and I'm 28. You might enjoy some of Masamune Shirow's other manga, like Appleseed or Dominion that don't have those kinds of things in them, though, as they DO have the hard sci-fi edge that makes GitS so good.
Yeah, we had the same discussion in a thread about a month ago and I think pretty much everybody agreed on that subject. |

Ok. I'll check out Appleseed and Dominion. GITS might have to wait for me maybe 2 years or so, when my parents will start to ease up a little. I'm also guessing that One Piece is still an on-going manga? |

I'm gonna be the odd man out and say to not go with manga counterparts to anime you've seen. Full Metal Alchemist is worth it but if you've seen the show then you'll want to start around Volume 7-8 (it gets totally different at 8 and starting at 7 might go well in keeping you in the loop of what's actually happening if you don't have a perfect memory of what happened in the show).
Other than that, I'd say to just go for extremely popular manga only titles or manga for anime you have yet to see. Berserk and Blade of the Immortal are both fantastic (though gory) and I'd recommend starting with either if you're looking for something action oriented to start. Berserk has an anime counterpart (of which I've only seen one episode) but I've heard that the manga is vastly superior if only for the simple reason that it tells the full story rather than the current (and likely only) 26 episodes of the anime. As for Blade of the Immortal, my only gripe is that Darkhorse partially flopped it. Not meaning that they ruined it but they made it read from right to left like normal (although it was through a cut and paste process so that the visuals aren't backwards but the panels read like an English comic). It kinda throws me for a loop when I'm searching for a volume of something and all of a sudden I'm looking at the back of the book rather than the front. |

I haven't watched FMA in a while, so I'll skip that for a little bit. And as for Berserk and Blade of the Immortal, I'll check them out a little later. First I'm probably going to go for One Piece and then Death Note (I was thinking about it last night). But yes I will deffinetly check out Berserk and BotI. |

Berserk is not just gory, but it also has a lot of sex in it. Although it is an absolutely incredible series, and one definitely worth checking out, if your parents will get upset about sex in manga, AVOID Berserk like the plague.
blind_assassin: I actually quite like the anime counterpart to Berserk. Though not as good as the manga, it's really a great series with all the action in full motion. And they actually stay really true to the manga, with the exception of removing two characters (spoiler[Puck and the Skull Knight]), which can easily be added back into the story. The anime covers from about volume 4 to 13. And a second season actually IS in the works. Check out thehawks.org or skullknight.net for more info regarding the second season and about the series. |
