Have you seen this before? I just thought I'd share it with you guys.. I just thought a lot of it were funny
![]() http://www.cs.utah.edu/~duongsaa/more_htm/jk_100animeRules.htm EDIT: Since this list happens to be a bit outdated, maybe we should come up with additional rules too ![]() another EDIT: Changed the title.. Anything with "let's" plus an exclamation mark in the end is automatically lame.. ![]() A lot of it are right most of the time, like: #34- Law of Probable Attire- Clothing in anime follows certain predictable guidelines: Female characters wear as little clothing as possible, regardless of whether it is socially or meteorologically appropriate. Any female with an excessive amount of clothing will invariably have her clothes ripped to shreds or torn off somehow. If there is no opportunity to tear off aforementioned female’s clothes, then she will inexplicably take a shower for no apparent reason (also known as the Gratuitous Shower Scene). *#84- Law of Dormant Powers- Anytime a hero is somehow outpowered and/or outclassed by the villain, he will invariably release powers/new moves he never knew he could accomplish... but his old teacher did! And here are two that I haven't been proven in a while: #37- Law of Extradimensional Capacitance- All anime females have an extrasdimensional storage space of variable volume somewhere on their person from which they can instantly retrieve any object at a moment’s notice. This mysterious dimension is commonly called "Malletspace". +#54- Law of Old Man Comic Relief- Comic relief comes in the form of a short, bald, wise-mouthed dirty old man or alien. Or the combination of any two of those traits. First Corollary- If old man is present, and is acting too horny, stupid, etc., there will invariably be an old woman to whap him over the head with a frying pan or something. ah, yes..I saw those. There were too many for me to read all of them, but they are very funny. I could name a lot of anime where any of those rules applied..but also quite a few where they didn't...but I think some of those rules apply for american cartoons more then anime

These "laws" have been around in some form or another since the mid-90s at the latest. The list from the people who originally came up with the idea can be found here as well as a history of the "laws of anime."

That list is probably older than some of the younger members here. Plus, it's nothing more than a list of cliches.

I wonder if there's an updated list? I just got this from my brother..
After reading the WHOLE list (I skipped the ones that were really long) I realize that a lot of the laws didn't apply anymore so it would be nice if they updated it or something. Looks like they didn't have anything to do then, it's probably still that way now ![]() |

I remember this ol' thing... I printed an early version of this back in high school. I'll have to get that print out back (it's currently at my boyfriend's) and look for changes... I'm sure law #13 was "there is no law 13" on my printout...

Oh gosh, don't remind me. Somebody posted all 100 rules on another forum, and I honestly cannot believe I took the time to read all of them. Still, it was a funny read, as so many of them are true. They don't apply to every series, of course, but I'd love to see a series that encompasses all 100 of these rules. That would be interesting to watch, to say the least.

So from an anime perspective, PlanetES has bad physics?

Haha, I have a friend who is a complete nerd and he was talking about some of these a while ago. Now I know what he was talking about. (I usually have no clue what he is talking about

I think that this one would apply to shana and her cape with the exception that it does not apply to all of the females. Does anyone know of a series in which this would apply to? |

I can see them thinking of Dragon Ball when writing rule #62.
#92 makes me laugh. Actually, for some reason I find myself thinking of Unosuke's return in Yojimbo. And that's not even animation. I'm not sure many of the newer rules are preserving the spirit of the original list, as they simply describe certain standard anime techniques such as blurring backgrounds. And they don't even have fancy names. Law of Sparklies? Come on. I might as well add a rule I made up. I actually made up another one, but it's represented here as rule #51. Anyway, here's Rule #101: The Law of Arboreal Magnetism. Any shuriken, kunai, etc. thrown by one ninja at another will invariably miss and stick into the nearest tree. |

I first read about a "mallet space" from a Philippine magazine called Questor (although they stopped producing somewhere around 2001, I think).. Some of the writers were making fun of Heero Yuy from Gundam Wing and his spandex shorts and one asked where does he get his gun from and another answered "from his mallet space" or something like that, then he defined what a mallet space was.. ![]()
You know what, you're right. I always noticed this too. ![]() |

OMG. You just ruined Gundam Wing for me. ![]()
Apparently it's just not dramatic if they go whirling off into the forest and land in some leaves. They have to, like, kill the tree to show how dangerous and pointy they were. The question is why they miss 99.9% of the time. Why even bother throwing them? I've started to think of those scenes as "shuriken spam". E.g., "Two ninjas clash. One kicks and the other ducks. Shuriken spam follows. More leaping and kicking." You'll notice that, in Naruto, ninja do get hit by kunai and such pretty frequently -- and then turn into logs! So, they were using Substitution-jutsu to fool the opponent into thinking the log was them. But they could have used anything for the substitution, and they used wood. Why? Law of Arboreal Magnetism. |
