What are some of the habits, like things you do or say, that you have acquired because of watching anime or reading manga alot? I see certain behaviors from friends and other people at anime clubs and conventinos that are obviously adopted from anime, such as cute catgirl behavior or saying a Japanese slang word in response to something. It's one thing to have those behaviors but its another thing to have done them so much that they have become a habit that you do without realizing it in your daily life.

Personally, I have picked up Misaki's "na?" from Angelic Layer and have recently caught myself using it a few times without trying to, it just comes out instinctively on its own now. Also another habit that I have had for a long time is to make a small "ah" sound just before I bite into something I'm about to eat. I see that alot in anime and I now do it almost every time, but I think it's still slighly forced than an actual automatic habit.

[EDIT: Revived this by merging it with the recent "anime habits" topic, April 2007. ~Zalis]

I always found that "ah" before eating funny. A habit I picked up is saying "yo" whenever I see my mates. Not the long, American way "yooooooowww wassup?" but the short, Japanese way of "yo". You should know what I mean.

Another habit I've picked up is saying stuff like "mazui" or "shi-ba-ta!" as opposed to "oh crap!" or "not good!"

Gesture-wise, I think I've been trying to run like anime characters ever since I could remember. I'm serious. You know how anime characters always run with their elbows going above their heads? Yeah. Recently, however, I've also tried running the ninja style with you arms wildly flapping behind you.

I've found myself making the "V" "I did it!" sign a lot.

I've also found myself using the words "baka" and "aho" in reference to certain customers in the store where I work.

I've been doing that, too.

One that I've been trying to suppress is using 'hai' instead of 'yes.' I really really don't want to have to explain why I'm casually using Japanese words to my non-anime friends (I'm a bit of a closet anime fan, you see).

It's amazing to think you could actually pick up habits from animated characters. Tad frightening, really. At least I haven't found myself going into psychotic rages and killing people with giant robots. Yet.

A lot of people blame some of my tendencies and mannerisms on anime (saying "hai", bowing, etc) without taking into consideration my love of Japanese culture and my year of Japanese language classes. I even wave my hand in the appropriate motion when I walk in front of someone.

(OT) This is my first time posting in this "updated" system, and I already hate it. Oh well I hope it grows on me.

Anyways, I picked up the habit of saving the world in the last possible moment, and saying my attacks outloud before I do them.

Me and my friends actually say "what's up" to each other with stupid anime quotes that only we understand and people laugh at us for.

Here are a couple of our current favorites;

Hellsing Ultimate - Alexanders constant drop of the word "Amen!!!". We try our best to get the accent that goes along with it.

Bleach - we were playing Bleach DS and one of Orihime's intros is the laugh, "Bwahahaha", so we do that along with the arms on the shoulders.

After I got the first season of Kenshin I found myself saying Oro randomly at times....it's such a great word and can be used for anything.....Didn't study for a test...Oro....my Cheeseburger has onion in it when I said no Onions....Oro....

Other then that I found myself saying "My berserker" from fate stay night....perhaps it's because of the way that line is delievered but I just find it so fun to say......

Small misunderstanding, there. Not "shibata", but shimatta -- it's the past tense of shimau, an auxiliary verb expressing completion of an action, possibly with regret involved.

Regardless, all of these patterns of behaviour you and the others mention are by no means habits -- as the result of a conscious decision to behave oddly, they must be considered affectations. Like wearing a monocle, they come off as slightly silly and overblown. But hey, if that's what rocks your boat, don't let me stop you.

Mesdames, messieurs, bon soir.

It all began back when I started talking to my motorcycle, my friends realized there was something wrong. I started getting scolded during kung fu practice for being too violent with my partners, and then blaming it on my hinman ("I told him to stop, I did..."). I was chased out, and left to find some new territory, but that's ok, they were a rotten pack anyway. My girlfriend left me then as well. Don't know why she was so upset. I know she didn't like the wings I made for her, although she wore the halo for halloween - but this time I only suggested that she should try a little harder to make her origami come alive and make some more interesting shapes, rather than those dull unmoving cranes. Well, that's the story so far. Right now I'm building a vanship in my garage.

Not really habits, but annoyances on my part.

After Elfen Lied, I spent about a day or so replying with "Nyu" to everything my wife said. The same happened with Yumeria, except all I said was "Mone!"

NOTE: Above actions are not considered wise when one's engagement present to said wife was a large collection of knives and swords.

Laughing This was just funny, actually your entire post was, I'm so glad I wasn't eating or drinking anything when I read it.

Ahem... to say something on topic.. ok, I got nothing, well how about..

I have started a very bad habit of watching anime when I know I should be doing something else that is supposedly more important. But, "Bah!" I say, "who needs things like a clean yard, or sleep, or breakfast?"

The other day, I was doodling Shinji Ikari's name all over my habnd in both English and Japanese. Something was called to me attention, so I stopped and looked up. I was handed something then, so I moved my hand from its posititionl. I then realized where I had subconciencly put my hands-there were in the position normally held by Gendo Ikari! The lesson is to never doodle anime characters names on your hands, becuase end up acting like their father Razz lol

Also, I don't know if this counts, but I like to draw real people in typical anime/manga style. I've drawn myself many times, as well as my friends. Also, I've drawn people on live action TV shows I watch in anime style. I'm currently into drawing Drake Bell, who is in the show Drake and Josh. I also really want to draw a chibi or Tim Gunn from Project Runway after I saw the bobblehead that was made of him. Razz

And even though my native language is English, I tend to shout both Japanese and Yiddish phrases at people I'm mad at. Yeah, I'm a weird little Jewish anime fan....Razz I use American swears too, but that's more when I'm mad at myself.

I invented my own sentence tag.

I one day just started saying "Oi" when I sighed, and it turned into "O Vaiga". Yes, I'm weird

I've developed a tendency to bow, even on the phone, and also the odd "hai" or "un".
