Don't belive the hype people. I think I've noticed a trend where less than stellar anime recieves an exorbitant amount of hype while significantly good shows (I'm look at you cartoon network with Blood + an Bleach) are left by the advertising wayside.
Case in point. I've seen both Phantom Memory Kurau (obsenely boring) and The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (has its good points but no where near the "second coming of Chirst" as the reviewers would have you believe). The amount of attention they recieve is ridiculous-- evidence by ANN space commitment given to Kurau-- and only hopes to serve priming the fanboys for a show that will give them a serious let down. So why do that? Why build us up on something that will for the most part let us down horribly while the stuff we should be hyping is left in the dust.

Answer: you like Blood+ and Bleach more than Kurau - Phantom Memory and The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, and you think the former two deserve more attention. Period.
Next please?

Generic "this anime is over-hyped" argument thread formula:
"Don't belive the hype people. I think I've noticed a trend where less than stellar anime recieves an exorbitant amount of hype while significantly good shows (I'm look at you [insert company] with [insert anime] an [insert anime]) are left by the advertising wayside.
Case in point. I've seen both [insert anime] (obsenely boring) and [insert anime] (has its good points but no where near the "second coming of Chirst" as the reviewers would have you believe). 1. Insert anime/companies into formula
2. Post topic in anime forum
3. Angry naysayers reply
4. PROFIT

Kurau Phantom Memory...popular?
....*insert endless laughter*
You have got to be kidding. Kurau Phantom Memory is in no way a popular anime. Just because it gets a promoting space on ANN does not mean instant hype. What do you believe should get hype? Blood+? Bleach? Yes, yes, severely overrated anime should definetly get an increase in hype. But oh wait, they do. More then they deserve (Mind you, I like Bleach and even Blood+ to an extent).
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is very popular and does get a lot of hype, but at least it's a quality anime that, for the most part, does deserve the hype. But Kurau....a relatively unknown anime getting more attention then it deserves? Wrong. Kurau is actually a very good anime that doesn't get the hype it deserves.
I'm sorry if you found my post rude, and I'd like to believe that I'm not very rude in my posts, but I find your post absurd.

You're so right. What I really can't believe is why a revolutionary series like Naruto is getting so little attention.[/sarcasm]
Bleach is hardly a "left by the advertising wayside" series. Shonen Jump has been giving it PLENTY of attention as of late, and there's a lot of talk about it all over the net. Just use Google and see for yourself. Blood+ isn't exactly underhyped, either. And having it advertised on ANN does not mean it's "overhyped". It just means the licensors have the money to pay for advertising space. Finally, just because you find one series boring and another one exciting, doesn't mean everyone has to think that way. I like Kurau" Phantom Memory, not because it's "overhyped", but because it has a lot of style and tries to do something fresh with a typical formula. But I don't think Bleach is "significantly good", because Shounen-action just isn't my favorite genre. It's all a matter of opinion.
EDIT: Accidentally spelled "Bleach" as "Bleah" (no, seriously)

So just because you found KPM to be "boring," it means that it's boring for all viewers? I've seen numerous anime that many people consider boring (like Figure 17, To Heart, Asatte no Houkou, Aria, Someday's Dreamers, Lamune, Human Crossing, etc.), and I've enjoyed them or at least found something to like about them.
Please cite a review that calls MOHS the "Second Coming of Christ." Since you put that phrase in quotes, it implies that you actually read it in a reiview, so sauce please? I've seen it, and while it isn't the be-all, end-all of good anime, I still found it worth buying. It's unfortunate that you felt let down by these series, but who are you to presume that everyone will. Besides, I'd rather believe a reviewer who can tell me what's good and what's bad about a series (and let me make my own judgement), instead of one random fan who's seen the show and calls it "boring" or "overrated."

I agree that while all this is subjective opinion there is sometimes an unfortunate lack of awareness of quality product that many people would enjoy if it was brought to their attention, but
A) Kurau is actually fairly unknown, those who have seen it have largely enjoyed it and it could probably do with more exposure, not less
B) Haruhi is liked by many because many find something to appreciate in it, seeing as it's a TV show and not a trend for setting people on fire, no-one's forcing you to watch it, I agree it is irritatingly all pervasive (I very much like the first episode but am trying not to let that affect my commentary) but am glad so many people enjoy it.
As for Blood I'm unsure what to think, it's known, but there is the issue of it bieng an unreleased licence, which makes me wonder:
"what's the deal, why no release for ages, Grr."
Bleach - C'mon, everyone's heard of Bleach. It's super popular, like Naruto.

Gee, what next? Diamond Daydreams is overhyped and Fruits Basket is obscure and underappreciated?
@ Thread starter: You're just hangin' out in the wrong place. If I went to a shoujo-ai forum I guarentee Simoun would be hyped and discussed more often than Naruto, but that doesn't make it more popular now does it?

Hmm. I see fighting words. However, in YOUR opinion, what is an anime worthy of being labeled as "stellar"?

The thing is Bleach and Blood+ don't need much hype or advertising. Being on AS is enough. They both came over with enough hype as it is, those are surefire hits. Haruhi and Kurau hwever, aren't surefire hits, they need the hype and word of mouth to get people to watch it. For alot of people, they might not be shows they would be immediately be interested in. Blood and Bleach are action shows with wide appeal. Casual anime fans already know about them, but they might not know about Kurau, or if they have, the might not watch it unless there is more media attention.

In RL, I know dozens of people who watch Bleach, and maybe 4 or 5 people who have seen The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (and I recommended it to those people too). In fact, on the internet it's really not that much different. I assure, you, I can find far more forum posts on the web about Bleach than Kurau and Haruhi combined. Seriously, where are you looking for hype? To claim that an immensely popular shonen show like Bleach is underappreciated and deserves more hype is like saying American Idol is underhyped.
Where do you think the hype comes from? Everything has to start somewhere. What reason do you think there was for people to come up with hype in the first place?
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya started out pretty much completely unknown before it began airing. Since it's not based off of a manga series, no one really knew what it was about at all. Many of the better-known anime blogs left it out completely off of their Spring preview lists. Some of the biggest anime forums may have had a thread on it, which usually consisted of just two or three people discussing the novel series. It was pretty much the definition of being "under the radar". So where did the hype come from?
There are two types of hype. One type involves either the fans or the company creating hype before the show actually gets released. This type of hype has pretty much no basis on the actual merits of the show. Fate/Stay Night was a great example; the eroge it was based on is quite popular from what I understand (I never actually personally saw the show or game). Bleach is another good example; fans of the manga already anticipated and hyped the show before it was even released. Blood+ should have also recieved a similar treatment, seeing as it's based off of the original Blood, no? Not so with Haruhi; Kyoto Animation didn't even release so much as a preview or promotion trailer for the show.
The second type of hype comes after the show has been released. This is a grass-roots type of hype. This kind of hype comes from there being actual praise-worthy substance in the show itself. Haruhi's hype comes solely from this source. You know why there's hype? Because there happened to have been a significant amount of people who enjoyed Haruhi's quality animation, excellent seiyuu work, unorthodox presentation, and interesting characters. When you tell people to stop hyping a series with this type of hype, you're basically telling them they aren't allowed to enjoy a show because you yourself found it bad. Get off your elitist high horse, please. I think I already submitted a rant to Answerman on this subject recently...
What I find intriguing is that you haven't given a single good reason why Kurau or Haruhi should be considered bad. You call Kurau "boring". OK, what does that tell me? How is it boring? To what extent? Worse than the snore-worthy Bleach fillers with forgetable characters and sorely lacking development? Similarly, what makes Blood+ or Bleach so spectacular that they deserve more hype than all other series? I've seen both, and I don't see how they're any more deserving. Bleach may be one of the better shonen titles IMHO, but I can easily deliver a full-length college paper on its flaws. Enlighten me please, if you believe you're so wise as to tell us what deserves hype and what doesn't.
While your post tells me nothing about what makes a show good or bad, it does tell me that you are very prone to being persuaded by the crowd. Apparently, you're also willing to color a show based on its fans rather than on its own merits. I think this speaks volumes about your mindset, no? Of course, you're perfectly entitled to your own opinion; no one here is going to force you to like Kurau or Haruhi. But if you're going to post such opinions on a public forum without delivering anything to back up your claims, then expect others to exercise their own right to form an opinion about you.

Yes, I would like to hear reasons on both of these series, too. While I wouldn't call it the Second Coming, I nonetheless found MOHS to be a brilliant bit of work in its manipulation of anime cliches and homages, one well worth repeated viewings. And based on the first volume alone, Kurau is a very different and special sci-fi "action" series which, I would think, should entice most fans who see it to fall in love with it.
These are two titles worth any otaku's effort to check out.
