hi there all, I registered here to ask for some advice. I hope you'll have some ideas.
I lost interest in anime a while ago, mainly because of other interests etc. To give you a time frame, my interest waned around the time that Appleseed (and GitS2) came out. I think apart from other things I became more and more perplexed by the use of CGI in anime to its detriment. Don't get me wrong, sometimes CGI can look remarkable and amazing, however the heavy use of it in modern anime really began to irk me and contributed to me loss of interest. However, as I say in my post title I want to get back on the horse and start watching anime again. What I want to know is what unmissable anime there has been in the last year that I need to catch up on. This can include Films, OAV & series. To give you an idea of my preference I'll list some of my favs. Lupin. Samurai Champloo. Anything Ghibli - I'm not so keen on their new stuff, preferring old classics like Totoro and Laputa. Cowboy beebop. ergo proxy - was on the fence about this one. Enjoyed some of it. Naruto+Bleach - despite being pretty childish I've kept watching these two series. full metal alchemist. looking forward to input! |

Recent unmissable anime eh? I don't know if you're into fansubs, so I'll just recommend anime currently available in the US.
Here are a few recent series (and one Ghibli film) that I'd recommend you watch (in addition to the aforementioned The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya ![]() Elfen Lied Eureka 7 Whisper of the Heart (Ghibli) Ah! My Goddess Hellsing Ultimate OVA |

hmmmm You don't actually seem to be that behind in terms of current anime. Here's a few recent shows that I personally enjoyed and would recommend to any anime fan:
Ouran High School Host Club - Don't let the bishounen (pretty boys) characters fool you. This show is hilarious for both genders Eureka 7 - Superb mecha show with a kickass soundtrack. Black Lagoon - violent and quite realistic (as in the weapons used are real) show about a modern day crew of pirates/smugglers in the South China Seas. Animation is top notch. Kemonozume - fairly generic Romeo + Juliet style story about a modern-day demon-hunter and a female demon falling in love. Very unconventional animation style. If you like this I also suggest watching the movie Mind Game which features very similar style of animation. Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya - I'm sure a lot of forum members will recommend this show. I consider it worth watching at least once just to see what all the hype is about. |

Unfortunately, this qualifies as a recommendation thread, and those are not allowed at this time. Please read this thread in detail. Additionally, you might want to take a look at these feature articles about some of the best anime in the past two years:
