For a second I thought I really was watching Place Promised in Our Early Days, they are very similar from what I can remember. I hated Place Promised even though the animation was stunning, I just couldn't feel any sort of emotions for the characters. It seemed superficial to me, unlike Oukashou - the first instalment of Byousoku 5 Centimeter - a chain of short stories about their distance. Oukashou had me under complete control, I couldn't move and I didn't want it to end. The animation left me speechless to begin with, it's the only anime that's ever made me wonder whether I'm looking at real images or not. The emotions were so real and I think anybody could identify with the themes. However, I feel there could have been more, I mean we hardly saw the faces of the two main characters. Also we weren't really given enough background information and context, unlike Place Promised (I haven't seen Voices of a Distant Star).
Also I feel like not enough happened. spoiler[They kissed, hugged and then cuddled. I wasn't expecting them to have sex but I wanted more expression, instead of subtleness similar to that in SaiKano which I abhore.] So what happens now? Does that same story continue or do the characters and setting change? From the preview I thought that Tohno is still there but from some reading up it seems that only the themes remain the same with each of the three short films. ps. I'm pretty sure there's not a thread on this already, please correct me if I'm wrong. All I could find was this. |
