This is the thing I truly realized I love about Shimura's writing and storytelling. To answer the questions in the review about Chiba's Christianity is spoiler[we never actually see the typical type of morality clashes between religion and sexuality manifest itself in Chiba herself. Instead we see that conflict manifest in another character who is a friend of Chiba's and goes to church with her.] So instead of putting the issue of her religion on Chiba and really distracting from the unique relationship and interaction between her and Nitori, the insertion of Chiba's church friend into the story takes on that role, and really it is his entire purpose. That is the masterful sort of sense of purpose and characterization weaving that shows just how much of a gift Shimura has for telling these types of stories.

$20.00 is a high price tag for you guys? lucky....
But its about time they got this out, I've really been looking forward to it since I've liked the manga for a long time now. to bad the anime wasn't very good but eh, now i can get the manga so i dont mind

I've been waiting for ANN to write a review for this since it came out, and I find this review to be pretty spot on. I've been a fan of Takako Shimura for quite a while now, and can't wait till I get the money to buy this!

The reference at the end to Yu Yabuchi's Mizuiro Jidai made me wistful, not only because there was little exposure of that series in the West (fansubs only got to ep 12 at best, worse with the scanslations), but because it is as the reviewer said, it takes middle school issues of bullying and puberty (and later, sex) and presents them in a very thoughtful way.
I think stories about middle school/late elementary are under represented, so it is a boon to know that things like wandering son are available, even if it means to throw in transgendered issues as the hook. I wish Mizuiro Jidai had the same fair shot. |

Woo~, was waiting for this. I keep meaning to read my copy of volume one, but ever time I'm about to pick it up I remember that volume 2 is, as far as I know, not even solicited, and the size of the 'people ordering this also ordered' bar on rightstuf made it seem like very few people were buying. Yeah, it's a very stupid and arbitrary thing to go on, but every other recently released manga I checked had a much smaller bar...
So yeah, more people need to pick this up, because if what I saw of the anime was any indication it's fantastic. |

I was interested in seeing how the subject matter would be presented, and, as the reviewer indicates, it is done well. However, I disagree with the "art" grade. For most of the book I was looking back to the list of characters at the beginning, trying to match them to the characters in the manga.

I haven't gotten my hand on the book yet, though I'm going to order it soon. As a fan of the manga for over 2 years now, I'm excited that I can actually buy the manga and have it in physical form. I believe the review was spot on with the major aspects of the first volume, including the characters acting too mature for their age, and in some respects the art style, which IMO improves throughout the course of the manga.

There are inflammatory statements in a honorifics/pronunciation guide?! I've been looking forward to this release ever since Crunchyroll simulcast the anime. Kind of glad that it doesn't have a dust jacket, I usually throw those things away, but in the case of this book, I'd probably feel guilty about throwing it. |

I saw this in the comic shop the other day and it looked beautiful. Reading the review has convinced my that I need to buy it. When I compare what other single volumes I could get for 15 quid, this is a cut above. Now I just need money >.<

What exactly DID he say, it sounds like he said something rather homophobic so now I'm curious. Anyway, since this is a bit more expensive that normal/I doubt I'll find it at my local B&N I haven't gotten this yet but really want to, I loved the anime so I'm hoping I'll enjoy the original manga just as much. |

No, no, not homophobic at all! The "notes" are really more of an "essay," and in it Thorn discusses his views on the retention of honorifics in translations. The whole tone is a bit defensive, like he's daring you to disagree with him, but the passage I was specifically thinking of was this:
So more inflammatory to the potential fanbase than anyone in the LBGTQ community! I mentioned it because I could see it offending some readers, and if this kind thing is going to bother you, just skip his essay. It's a good one, but the book is incredible and wonderful without it. |

I got my pre-ordered copy just two days ago, and read it in almost one sitting (only got up to make dinner). This is a very nice and interesting story, told in a subdued way.
US$20 really isn't too much for a story and book of this quality. I just wish FantaGraphics would publish the volumes quicker. Their website doesn't show the second volume yet, but Amazon does, for November 2011. I'll pre-order it as soon as possible through FG's website. |
