I haven't started a good new manga in a long time, so I thought I'd ask if there was anything original or exciting coming out, whether it be in Japan or here in the US. The only series I'm looking forward to this year are Mushishi, part of which I've read; Hoshin Engi, all of which I've read; and Aqua, the sequel of which I have read. So as you can see I haven't got much to look forward to, save for re-reading some of my favorite scanlations in book format. I'll probably give To Terra a shot, but again, I'm more interested in reading some currently-running series.
I'm especially interested to know if there are any good shonen manga coming out in Japan. As good as Naruto and One Piece (the Halloween-themed world is hilarious) are right now, ever since Death Note ended I've been hunting around for another good series to follow. I've heard Kekkaishi is good, and has some unusual qualities: can anyone give me their opinion?

Houshin Engi... Is the the manga for which the anime Soul Hunter is based on? Cause that show sucked...

I just started Kekkaishi and I really like it so far. The action takes a backseat to the character interactions which is a big plus for me. It's a bit formulaic in the fact that it's about a boy who is a demon-hunter but it's more original then some of the shonen out there. I don't like it as much as something like Naruto, but it has its own unique charm and it's worth a look.
As for manga on the horizon, there really isn't much that has caught my eye. I'll be eager to see what Viz has done with the new titles in their Shonen Jump line but that seems to be it. I have a lot of titles to catch up on so I guess it's a good thing I won't be tempted by too many new ones.

Yup, that was Soul Hunter. It starts out similar to the manga, but lacks pretty much everything the original story had: ridiculously self-aware humor, so many character deaths it's almost funny, and quite possibly the strangest plot twist I have yet to see in any manga ever. I wouldn't call it a masterpiece, but it also had a very, very good ending, which is pretty rare for a long shonen series. I find it hard to recommend because of its strangeness, but I found it well worth the read for me personally.

For shounen, Gintama seems to be a promising shounen this summer that gives me the impression of good comedy mixed with satire from what I've heard and sampled of it. Heard Kekkaishi is also a step away from the usual type of shounen. I should also note Pretty Face is coming out this summer as well, and it is definitely better than it should be given its premise.
For more mature material? Well, Hiroki Endo's Tanpenshu is being released, first volume out, and the last volume due in May. Del Rey is also re-releasing Tokyopop's defunct Parasyte in its wideban version. The third (Perhaps last?) Tatsumi collection should also be put out by Drawn & Quarterly this year, too.
... I think that covers it for upcoming stuff. Now if you're talking about recently released titles...

I don't see why it'd be the last. The Pushman and other Stories/Abandon the Old in Tokyo was only the best of that year, I believe. Tatsumi has an enormous amount of work they can keep drawing from, I'm sure. I'd love it if those books do well enough so that we can see more gekiga over here.
