I've just recently picked up both Train Man magas, the one single volume of Train Man (A Shoujo Manga) released by Del Rey and the multiple volume Train_Man Manga released by Viz Media. I've read both and I've enjoyed both but I prefer the Del Rey adaptation of the manga. Mainly I'd say its because of the artwork (which Ironically discouraged me from reading it in the first place) and the fact that even though its a condensed version I still found it to be perfect. Now that isn't to say the Train_Man adaption by Viz Media isn't any good. Its just the artwork of the Viz Adaptation (to me at least) reminds me of a mix of early 80s artwork (similar to that of macross now that I think about it) and some early 90s artwork and it seems more comedy oriented with the artwork. Overall I just prefer the Train Man manga released by Del Rey over the Train_Man manga released by Viz.

Just curious which adaptation other people prefer.

^-^ ahh 7 months without internet at home is finally over

There are THREE versions of Train Man out in the States, actually... the two you mention and this one from CMX (plus another that's so far unlicensed). I read the first volumes of all 3 this past week in preparation of an article I'm writing about the entire Train Man phenomenon. While I'll save my full argument for that article, here's a summary of what I thought of the books:

Viz -- My favorite by far. The artwork appealed to me for all the reasons it didn't appeal to you....I love that 80s art style (I see your Macross comparison...I think his style looks like a cross between Macross' Haruhiko Mikimoto and Area 88's Kaoru Shintani), and I think that the artist's gentle approach really worked for the Train Man story. It's pacing is perfect, the art is clean and attractive, and it appears to take fewer liberties with the source material.

CMX -- A very typical shonen adaptation that will appeal to fans of shonen romances more than the other two, but others may find it pretty derivative. Train Man looks and acts just like Keitaro from Love Hina, and Hermes isn't developed at all in this first volume (although, because of what part of the story is covered here, that's somewhat understandable). A good adaptation for the right fan, but not for me.

Del Rey -- I enjoyed this well enough, but it didn't seem to have the magical quality of the Viz adaptation or (especially) the movie. Also, it took a lot more liberties with the source material, particularly by doing things like giving the characters names and tacking on an epilogue.

Again, all are good enough that they're worth reading, but for my money, the Viz one was the most enjoyable. Have you seen the movie yet?

No, sadly not. I'm saving up some money right now (currently in high school and still unemployed) to purchase the DVD which I believe is being released this month by Viz. I'm heavily anticipating it. If you have seen the movie I'd like to hear your opinion on it.

The DVD actually came out yesterday. I *loved* the Train Man movie, more than any of the manga versions, in fact. For a solid review of the movie, I suggest reading last week's Shelf Life column.

It's virtually unheard of for a Japanese live action drama TV series to get imported into the US, but I suppose if the movie is successful enough, anything is possible. Nothing's been licensed, as far as I know.

Its a quote from the Naruto dub. Its Naruto's english version of dattebayo. I started using it around the time the dub came out to annoy hardcore Naruto fans because they didn't like it.

Anyone interested in finding out more about Train_Man should most definitely check out the expansive articles I wrote recently for PLAYBACK:stl, including a review of the movie and an in-depth comparison of the 3 manga series. I worked really hard on these, let me know what you think!
