The voice of Naruto is done by a female in the english dub,can not tell if it the same for the sub version. So,I was wondering is this a common practice for females to do males leads in amime. If so can you name the most notables ones and how do you rate them.

Naruto is also voiced by a woman in Japanese. It's a common practice if the character is a young boy (basically <15 years old). Some others are Shinji from EVA; Ed Elric from Fullmetal Alchemist; and Goku from Dragonball (including Z and GT). Although Kenshin from Rurouni Kenshin was also voiced by a woman, so it can also include effeminate men.

It's a very common practice for young male characters to be voice by female VAs in Japan. Mainly because women can produce the high pitched voice of a young man better than an adult male VA can.

Another character that is/was played by a woman is Yuki of Fruits Basket. Aya Hisakawa not only did his voice but did the voices of Miki (Utena), Maya (Tenjho Tenge) and Ami (Sailor Moon)

I heard at one point it was an Labor law issue, which doesnt make sense, when you see how many LA child actors there are. I dunno. I do know that I prefer Paku Romi and Rie Kumigawa (sp?) over that Mantignona (or whatever the hell his name is) and Linus- I mean, Aaron Disumke.

IF you can't tell if Naruto is voiced by a man or a woman in Japanese, why not just check the Encyclopedia entry for Naruto?

Yeah, it's the limited number of hours a day/per week that child actors can work that keep studios from using them. I don't know if this applies to voice acting specifically, but in general, the DoL mandates 3 hours per day/18 per week during the school year. It's somewhat tough to get done, no matter what what the time constraints are. Additionally, some also believe that kids don't have the experience and/or vocal skill necessary to pull off a role. Hence the use of women playing young boys.

As mentioned, its a very common practice.
Another notable male character voiced by a female is Bart Simpson, done by Nancy Cartwright.

Yeah lots of VA are trained actors before they get into the VA business, whereas most people who want to be a VA don't really think about doing theater work or taking acting classes.

As well as Anna Paquin who voiced Ray in the english dub of Steamboy. It's not as common a practice in the US though and it's somewhat a mixed bag. I must admit there have been times I've heard females voicing male characters and it just didn't seem to fit or was too high, this especially seems to occur in midteen characters. Sometimes it works well, sometimes it just doesn't seem to fit

I think that the worse North American one that I have ever heard was Venus Terzo doing the VA for male Ranma. Anime dazed

It's interesting though that they don't use men for those roles, like is done in US. Many male actors can easily make their voice higher and sound like boys - I wonder why they don't do it.

True, they could make their voice sound like that, but for how long? It's one thing to break out a falsetto and speak like a little boy every once in awhile, but to do it for several hours a day to dub 13,26, or more episodes of a series would be killer on the vocal cords.

I'm not all that well informed about the subject, but can't they just turn the pitch up with audacity to make it sound differently or something?

Do you mean the difference of styles of voices they use (fairly high and squeaky) as opposed to the Western style (more "realistic") that would make it more demanding - because obviously the Vic Mignognas etc. do it? I'm just thinking aloud here...
