I could not agree with your review more, this is not for everyone, and if you are going to be giving this a chance [which you should], you definetly need some patience. I think this series is beautiful in its philosophical depressive out look on society, and that if you pay attention to the different underlying philosophical themes, it will truly make you wonder about human nature and its existence. Now, I am not an author, my bachelor's degrees were not in English so please forgive my attempt at something coherent. I just wanted to let people know that there is more to this series, I have seen the whole thing and it really gets going towards the end, but you have to stick with the WHOLE series to get there.

Yes, I agree with you completely. People should give EP a change, and not be put off by the early episodes, since it doesn't really start getting good until further along in the series. Ergo Proxy used to be my all time favorite anime, until I watched the entire series of Evangelion (and The End of Evangelion), that is.

A minor point, and I'm not sure if this qualifies as spoiler but I'll spoilerize it to be safe, but I thought the Romdo proxy was the one that was killed in the first volume. I'm going on the assumption that one would refer to the proxy that escaped from the lab as the Romdo proxy, whereas the proxy chasing Vincent followed him from Mosk.

well this was explained in the episodes on this DVD.
The Proxy that escaped from the lab in the first episode, the same Proxy that chased Vincent in the mall, is the Proxy from Mosk. Daedalus said that it was stolen when Romdo attacked Mosk. The Romdo Proxy is another issue entirely and you just need to watch the rest of the series.

Grah. The lack of clarity in the naming of the proxies is confusing me. I've seen the first 13 or so episodes fansubbed, so I know that Vincent is a proxy, which is why I'm now so confused about the naming. I'm not necessarily very observant, so I assumed that Vincent, being from Mosk, would be the Mosk Proxy. Meanwhile, I'm waiting for my copy of volume 2 to arrive in the mail (I pre-ordered, too) so I can watch it in English, because I seem to be able to pay attention to everything that's going on when I can listen and watch instead of read and watch.

I just finished watching the second volume of Ergo Proxy a few minutes ago and was completely amazed by it. The series is now my favorite currently being released in the States.
Am I the only one who gets the reference in volumes two title? The title "Re-l 124C 41+is a direct reference to Hugo Gernsback's (the famous Hugo award is named after him) 1911 classic Ralph 124C 41+: A Romance of the Year 2660. The joke Gernsback made is the title is pronounced aloud Ralph One Who Forsees for One+.
I love the OST for this series, especially the really cool percussion pieces.

I love this series. I watched the first episode on a NewType USA DVD, and was pretty much underwhelmed. I went out on a limb and bought the first DVds, and I've been hooked since. It's definitely one of the best dubbing jobs I've seen lately. If it keeps going the way it's going, it's definitely going to be one of my favorites of 2007.
Between Noein, Rumbling Hearts, Bleach, and now Ergo Proxy, 2007 is going to be a great year

Fair review, though I would've given it a "B+" at the most since I felt that this patch of episodes are the weakest in the entire series. A lot of things are introduced without any build-up or shock (episode eight's setting, most notably), and the characterization, as you mentioned, Key, is lacking.
Key wrote: | And is it just me, or does Re-l look better in the scenes where she doesn't have her eye make-up on? |
You are not alone in that thought. I thought her character generally looked better without the "Amy Lee" look, particularly in a later episode.
Quote: | Use of the very appropriately-named “Paranoid Android” by Radiohead closes out each episode, but “kiri” by MONORAL is also a great and appropriate complement to the opener visuals and, arguably, the better song of the two. |
Bah, I like "Paranoid Android" better by far over "kiri" (I'm biased to Radiohead, but whatever). Still, I will admit to favoring the opening over the ending because the imagery in the former is far more interesting and I particularly like the scene of Vincent crying out in the middle of the wasteland for some reason.
Quote: | In tone, style, and look Ergo Proxy most resembles Texhnolyze, although its story goes in quite a different direction and it has different philosophical underpinnings. |
It's a shame that the writers Ergo Proxy didn't take the concept that Texhnolyze used by having the themes revolve around the story rather than the story revolving around the themes... but I suppose Dai Sato wanted to stroke his own muse and slap on the pretentiousness to somewhat absurd levels.

Nope, the little "joke" of "real one to for see forsee for one" is a rather obvious one to us who like to contemplate what every single little bit in a "smart" story means.

I hope that Geneon decides to include the second OST as the extra for the limited edition of the third volume, since not all of us who bought the first volume with the box wants to go for the Best Buy "special" just to get a soundtrack.

I know I'm late in posting on this thread, but I just finished vol 2 earlier today.
I can safely say that I have a new favorite series for 2007. Like others have posted before, I fell in love after the first two eps. As I was watching, I couldn't help but think that this show is sort of a cross between Blade Runner & AI with a few others that I can't quite put my finger on at the moment.
How about that Pino!?! That time when she and Vincent were heading for the plug vent, and she started to pull on what I thought was going to be a hoody, and then it turns out to be bunny ears, I nearly fell out of my chair!. Talk about a stark contrast to the dark and foreboding surroundings that the characters are in. ( I don't think that was really a spoiler, but I decided to play it safe so as not to make someone mad).
BTW, if anyone is wondering if my screenname being the same as a character in this show is a coincedence, it's not. My previous account got all screwed up, so I decided to open a new one. In trying to decide a screenname, it struck me that Daedalus seemed really cool. Unfortunately, I misspelled it when I signed up. Ah well.
Volume 3 is in my possesion, begging to be watched.
