i know this is a silly question, but i read the first book of red river and i really liked it, but i am so tired of being disappointed with books, can anyone tell me if the series is good? (dont give details i dont want to spoil it for myself.) also, the hero sounds kind of like a womanizer does he ever in the series sleep with someone else besides the heroinne?

I would consider Red River very good. I'm not finished with it yet, but if you like the first volume, chances are you'll enjoy the rest. I'll admit that I was a little disappointed around volume 10, but the series picked up again after that. I'd recommend that you stick with it if you've liked it so far.
Wouldn't that be a spoiler? |

Having read all titles by Chie Shinohara listed in the Encyclopedia except Kioku no Ashiato (which I found almost no information), I can tell you honestly and confidently that Red River is excellent and definitely the best work she has ever created. I spent many additional hours looking into the history of Hittite Empire and linked those new knowledge with those I already knew (e.g. spoiler[the forced marriage of Ankhesenamen and murder of Zannanza after the untimely death of Tutankhamun; I knew the history of the Egyptian side quite well but knew almost nothing of the Hittite side. Man, I can't forget that picture of senile yet still lewd Ay having young and beautiful Ankhesenamen sitting on his lap...]). In summary, it is one of the best shoujo manga I've ever read, and particularly good if you are also interested in history.

I only read the first volume, and I did enjoy it. However, it seemed a little cliched and I didn't think it would be worth 28 volumes of an investment. I liked the art, and I love reading about history through other media, but I just couldn't bring myself to buy 28 volumes of it.

yes, it would be a spoiler to hear the answer to the second question but it would help me from being disappinted and reading the whole series for nothing.

Stop playing rhetorics; do you want an answer or not? Highlight the following paragraph if you do: spoiler[Yes, he did, but way before he knew Yuri / Ishtar, and produced no child. It was only depicted once, with a single shot, when one consort of his told Yuri how different she is by comparing his behavior in bed. He has not touched any other woman after Yuri became a significant part of his life.] |

I've read the first 3 volumes and I thought it was a very solid title, although I still haven't gotten off my butt and bought any more of the series.

I was lucky and borrowed volumes 1-26 from a friend, and although I never got to read the end I can say it's one of the best manga I've read. Shinohara has excellent storytelling techniques in her manga, besides the nice artwork and good plot.

I have up to volume 7 and so far I'm liking it a lot. Suprise, suprise I usually dislike shojo. At first when I started reading vol 1 I thought it was going to be another typical shojo with a feather-for-brains heroine, a sappy unrealistic prince charming and a sappy, unrealistic romance BUT I was pleasantly suprised. I actually found myself rooting for the heroine later on. On the downside..yeah I do have to agree with the fact that the girl-gets-sent-to-parallel-universe plot is overdone. oh well, most shojo have cliched themes anyway.
