Glad to hear this is a worthwhile adaptation of the manga but heartbroken to hear how much had to get abridged to get it into one film. I adore the classic anime and I hope this will direct people its way in addition to the manga. The manga is probably the best version of this story but the price point for the English version is rather steep.

If this film does well maybe they’ll consider doing a full series reboot. Would also love to see someone pick up the license for the 70s anime.

I'm pretty fond of The Rose of Versailles despite, or even because of, its 70s shoujo melodrama, and I own all the volumes of the manga (I'm still working my way through the TV anime). I guess it's not too surprising they made this movie a musical, considering BeruBara's roots in Takarazuka theatre.

I do wonder how many characters they left out, though. Is Rosalie still in this movie? I know she wasn't very popular with Japanese fans when the manga was running and that's why she makes fewer appearances after the Black Knight arc, but still.

The 70s anime is licensed, and you can get it on Blu-ray or watch it for free on several streaming services.

It's been licensed twice, even. I have the Nozomi/Right Stuf limited edition box sets on DVD and the Discotek Blurays both.

A musical, huh? That's an interesting take.
I've got the original on DVD in my backlog, so not sure I'd want to watch this before the TV series, but I'll definitely be adding it to my watch list.

Watch the original TV anime before you watch the film. That way you can tell which part was remove from the TV show.

To be honest, I'm aware of the live-action film made in 1979 and was a French-Japan co-production and that 1979 live-action film has been forgotten. I'm kind of surprised that there has been no further attempt to do a 2nd live-action adaptation given that we're living in an era of streaming and Netflix's live-action One Piece did so well, I'm kind of surprised that no attempt of giving Rose of Versailles a live-action streaming TV adaptation. I mean France does a good job when it comes to TV drama. Given that France adapted City Hunter into a film and Cat's Eye into live-action French-language TV drama for Prime Video. I'm a little surprised France (& Japan) has not thought about giving Rose of Versailles another shot at live-action adaptation since that one make sense, a French-language TV drama adaptation of Rose of Versailles would work really well in my opinion.

I was kind of expecting they would adapt the full story considering the latest promotional materials but I don't think a single trailer has really highlighted the musical aspect (much like a lot of modern American musicals, come to think of it). Considering the series' Takarazkua popularity, it's even more fitting.

She's in it. She's voiced by Saori Hayami.

The Youtube channel has been very English friendly by including subtitles in every preview/staff interview. Hope this is a sign that there are plans to release in the US soon.

She's been shown in a couple of promo clips so but nothing more so I think she's a cameo at best

Thanks. The review didn't mention her and I don't think she's shown up in any of the trailers, so I wasn't sure.

I wonder how deeply the Tarazuka Revue's adaptations of the story over the years influenced the production, literal decades of people figuring out how to tell a shorter version of the story that they could work with.

I was gonna ask, is there a way to watch this for overseas fans (legally, of course)? A quick Google shows that Richard is ANN's overseas correspondent (I always think it's Kim for some reason >.< ), but I guess English speakers will just have to kinda sit tight for now?

It'd be nice to get the songs transliterated into English, but that so rarely happens that I'm not banking on it. But I can dream! I once thought RoV would never make it stateside, so hey, I guess anything can happen!

Yeah, if it did well in Japan, perhaps it may be released faster overseas but a few months if not a year or two.

I was also concerned about how condensed it will be but I guess if anyone is interested, they should watch the original TV series anyway.

Actually, Kim used to be a Japan correspondent for ANN as well (though we had only a few months of overlap before she moved onto her current job). As for when/if the movie will hit the US, we can only hope. (I personally saw it at a press screening here in Japan back in December.)

I saw it today, I thought it was really good. I'm glad that it's a musical! And it's pretty good, as a movie and as a musical. You definitely do understand that it cuts the story down to fit into one movie. Characters make a big decision or action, and it feels like it must have been more connected to other things in the manga that you don't see in the movie.

I wonder if this movie and the new musical in Korea worked together to not cover the same plot points. There are major characters in each that don't appear in the other.

If it's successful, I hope they'll make more musical anime, especially since Toho has so many great original musicals that would be excellent as anime.
