I take it that McDonald's Japan collaboration with Evangelion doesn't involved a Happy Meal toys with characters from Evangelion given that the anime and the franchise ain't exactly child friendly, won't it?

A friend sent me a picture earlier today suggesting that that is, in fact, what is happening. Said photo showed spoiler[a set of Eva units that transform into McDonalds items - 01 into a burger, 02 into fries, and 00 into a coffee cup.]

Actually it was. It was the fact Evangelion was aimed at kids that made it so controversial back in the day when it aired and led to harsher industry censorship standards after it aired. It took the timeslot that 80s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles had in Japan funnily enough and you can find the promo commercial where the Japanese TMNT voice actors say farewell to the kids at home when the show aired its final episode and then promoted the new anime Evangelion.

There are some "EVA" collaborations I don't understand. Why is McDonald's Japan getting involved with "NGE?" As those like mdo7 pointed out,it's not exactly the most kid friendly anime out there. In fact,it's one of the darkest, gloomiest anime I've ever seen. Yet,they're having Happy Meals with EVAs in them? I'm really confused over this. It would be like seeing something like "Goodfellas" or "Nightmare on Elm Street" toys in a McDonald's Happy Meal. Imagine that if you so choose. Neutral

At least it's not characters from the Grisaia series or The House in Fata Morgana. Now that's some dark stuff. Makes Eva look like Care Bears in comparison Laughing

Can't believe no one's made a joke about Shinji's 'special sauce' yet.

I see some of you aren't old enough to remember RoboCop and other R-rated movies being turned into cartoons and getting toys in the '80s Wink

Uh Snomaster, they already have children's toys based on R-rated movie back in the 80's and the 90's and this was in the US just to remind you. Hell, some of the R-rated movies we had sometime ended up having Saturday Morning children's cartoon made for kids that can't watch the film/movie but found another way to market towards kids. Yeah, Rambo, and Robocop. Both of their respective films were rated R, and yet we have children's cartoon based on them (ie: Rambo: The Force of Freedom) I mean did you not knew of this (assuming you were born before 1980's, or you grew up in the 90's like me). Even Mortal Kombat, an M-rated game had a children's cartoon made before we had the Mortal Kombat Legends adult animated film series. That's not the only time M-rated games had children's merchandise made and marketed toward kids that either played the game or cannot played them.

Now if Evangelion had came out in the 80's, or if McDonald's Japan had been making Happy Meal toys or merchandise when the series came out in 1994, that wouldn't have bothered me because that was the period when R-rated movie or M-rated video game having children's toys made for them was considered acceptable and not raised an eyebrows back then. But today, yeah, a Evangelion toy in McDonald's Happy Meal wouldn't go so well with today's setting. So that's why I would be a bit uncomfortable with McDonald's Japan making Evangelion Happy Meal Toy, and speaking as someone who would become a parents, that would make me a bit uncomfortable.

Hence why I brought it up above, and sorry for the delay. But I had to let a friend use the computer hence why I didn't put it in until now.

Ugh, please don't give any people & McDonald's Japan any idea. I can't unsee that or get that out of my mind.

Aw, man, you and mdo7 beat me to bringing up RoboCop. Sad Alien had a fair amount of merch for kids, too. (Which might be in one of mdo7's links; I haven't read them.)

Combined with just how much cultural penetration Evangelion has (A Cruel Angel's Thesis is still a regular on the annual Oricon Karaoke Chart), and the fact that, as mentioned, it aired in a timeslot for kids' cartoons? I'm not at all surprised by the idea of a McDonald's collab.

On another note, those definitely are some shellformers there. Unit 02 less so, to be fair.

The American branch of McDonald’s literally has for sometime been running a promotion of happy meals for adults which also come with toys.

After seeing this video of TMNT farewell and thank you (which I thought was charming and impressive at that time), and the bumper for Evangelion, I can understand why it got a bit of a controversy at that time.

I wasn't aware that McD's has started to offer adult happy meals and that comes with Friends Funko POP!-styled toys, I must have missed that news. But I never thought McDonald's would start offering happy meals toward adults like what you shown above. I stand corrected.

I guess the Evangelion X McDonald's collaboration is justified enough for me after seeing the adult happy meal and the Friends Funko-styled figurines you just shown me.

They’ve been doing it for I believe 2 years around here but I’ll admit doing a collaboration with Friends of all things is……out there compared to Japan doing Evangelion.

Well,mdo7. I'm aware of stuff like "Rambo" and "Robocop" getting cartoon versions of those franchises. I was around for them. I remember them. Here's the thing. They tried to make them as kid friendly as possible. I have no idea if it's possible to do a kid friendly version of "EVA." I'd be amazed if they tried. Also,I wasn't that aware of McDonald's doing adult Happy Meals. That's as strange to me as it gets,to be honest.
