isn't happening on anything last gen or current gen. there's already been benchmarks with the Pro showing it's struggling for 60 stable fps in modern games still

It's one of those things where it maybe could do it under the most optimal situations, including a developer that makes a game in a way that it can use it. I think there was maybe one game that touched that 8k resolution that was on the box, and it was basically just a tech demo with very little gameplay so it could focus on visuals.

I like to add some additional information about the PS5 Pro regarding 8K, and PS4 games playback:
Like the standard PS5, the PS5 Pro doesn't support 8K (of course make sense there's no 8K TV on the market, and there's no games out there in the market that have 8K display), but it does have 8K screenshot (again, doesn't make sense because there's no 8K TVs being sold on the market). I can also confirmed the PS5 Pro will have plenty of PS5 Pro enhanced games more then what the PS4 Pro got. Speaking of PS4/PS4 Pro, I can confirmed the PS5 Pro does have system level & enhancement option for PS4 games. The enhancement has some limitation and side effect though. Let me quote the PS Lifestyle article:
Playstation Lifestyle wrote: | An image circulating online shows that PS5 Pro has a new option under Screen and Video > Video Output. ‘Enhance Image Quality for PS4 Games’ does exactly what the title states, but with the caveat that it won’t work on all last-gen games, and players may have to turn the option off if they experience “unexpected behavior during gameplay.”
For some reason, Sony didn’t really advertise this feature, which is strange considering that players have amassed massive last-gen libraries at this point. Its existence was disclosed only a month ago, when a Japanese outlet specfically quizzed Sony about PS4 games running on PS5 Pro. |
So for anyone that is planning to buy a PS5 Pro and with a PS4 game catalog, please be aware if you're going to use the Enhance Image Quality mode for PS4 Games mode, you could have some possible side effect. So plan and play accordingly.

sony freaking scammed people the 8K bumbo jumbo. even the 4090ti struggle with 8K, let alone PS5. low scamming behavior from sony, disappointing

This would only be a scam if people were buying the system strictly for the 8K compatibility which they’re not. And if the system could not in fact display images in the resolution which it supposedly can/has the potential to do so.

Not to downplay the technical achievement, but isn't 60fps the limit of what people can see?

I miss the days when new consoles would try to sell themselves by being able to play fancy new games, rather than just... very slightly improved versions of games we've already been playing for one, two, sometimes even three generations.

That's the theory. So with any variation in a framerate that stays above 60 should, in theory, be imperceptible.
Though, certainly, there are folks out there who claim to be able to distinguish higher framerates.

Speaking for myself, I can see a small difference around 90ish FPS and at around 110ish I can see an even bigger difference. When I've hit my current monitor's refresh limit of 144 I can't however. Plan to get a 160 to 180hrz monitor soon (not for that reason however) but I think i've hit the limit for myself. However, even if I can't see it I'm pretty sure my brain can tell my hands and fingers the difference because I tend to play better at 144 hrz for the very few games I am good at (mainly co-op games). I think it really depends on the person if you ask me because I have a online friend(if he is to be believed) a former jet pilot and according to him, he can see a difference at a whopping 500FPS/hrz!

We can get games at 120 fps on last gen but current gen is a bit difficult
