I think focusing story-first is where the best entries in the Koei strategy series land. I was going to buy this day one, but I slowed up when I was seeing a lot of reviews coming in saying the Ai feels a bit busted (smart as a bag of rocks) - also that it seems Koei may be holding content back for a PUK (an expansion kit that adds more features, typically paid). Any time a new game is released, you often have players that no-life'd RotTK 9 or some other number come in and whine that Koei cheated them out of something or another in the new version, but from what I can tell, the remake of 8 here is solid enough that new players that simply just want to come in and focus on the story will probably not notice the problems. Probably.
Koei just posted an update this morning for it, and there's a good chance that by the time they have an expansion kit out and are done fixing everything that this might be the version I point new players to for RotTK purposes in the future, but be warned that Nobunaga Sphere of Influence packaged Ascension as its own separate game, and not an update DLC. Aside from Ascension, RotTK 13 with PUK is still probably their best, most full-featured release to date, but you have to make sure you have a hardware configuration that doesn't have incompatibilities with it. |
