It kinda breaks my heart that Gushing and Acro are going to be talked about in the same sentence for the rest of their relevancy. Especially for younger anime fans, it's unfortunate. I absolutely love both shows, but it's equivalent to r34 images popping up next to coloring book pages when a kid looks up My Little Pony... (using kid here to mean really anyone under 18 here who doesn't need to interact with extreme BDSM practices)

Just look back at the Sailor Moon anime.
for those of you that watches it or remembers it. it's on Adult Swim's Toonami Rewind Block. If You Guys have Cable TV you can Catch it (Sailor Moon) every Friday at 5pm.

I kind of feel like the light novel A Magical Girl Retires by Korean author Park Seolyeon belongs in this conversation about adult magical girls. The protagonist is buried by credit card debt, works a crappy job at a convenience store, gets a magical credit card as her talisman, and the villain’s plan is to spoiler[rapidly accelerate time so that global warming happens faster, causing humanity to die by its own hand.] Short book, but still gives you plenty to think about.

It gets written off as a Madoka wannabe but Magical Girl Raising Project has stuff for adults beyond "adult (violent) content".
Magical Girls exist under the "Magical World" which is not so much a separate world as it is a giant organisation. There are different factions at war with each other, and there are departments such as Magical Girl Department, Resources, inspection etc. Some of these departments don't get along with others, and Magical Girls often aim to get a job within a one (or a faction). Every so often you'll get random stories from within the business side of Magical Girl-ing. It's a lot of fun (for example, the staff members that have to find a way to let a technologically inept magical girl read their biography, which was only published digitally...) and surprisingly deep.
There's also plenty of adults in it. There's the mages who live alongside Magical Girls (and some hate MGs) who are all different ages, and the magical girls themselves span different ages. (The aforementioned tech confused magical girl is implied to be an old lady).

Unfortunately this stuff is really only in the novels and not in the anime (been a while since I read the 2nd book but I don't think there'll be much about it in the upcoming anime)

It's kind of similar to Magilumiere, world building wise at least. It's just not so much of a focus.

This, yes, couldn't have said it better myself. And honestly, not just for the U18s. My bitter and jaded 30-year-old ass wishes I could say "I enjoy Acro Trip" without a bunch of dudes shouting at me "iT's jUsT uNsExY gUsHiNg!!!!!11!1!11!" Like no, actually, it's not just that. Kore wa kore wa sore wa sore wa.

You two are really overestimating the whole thing. The anime series happened to release shortly after one another, while having somewhat similar part of main theme, so people will compare it for a few weeks, not for the rest of their relevancy. Who still remembers jokes about Ice Guy crushing on his Cool Female Colleague being actually kid of the couple from the In-Spectre, Yuki-onna and one side arc protagonist? Or the Chivalry of the Failed Knight being indistinguishable from Asterisk War, with both shows airing in same season?

The most important thing from the column though is that Koshigaya rocks and reviewers are correct in recognizing this fact. Delinquent gals seem to be rarer in manga now, with gyaru taking over their place for rebel character type, and they never were as common as male delinquents anyway, so Koshigaya being magical girl version of that, and working adult + cool senpai at that is just great .

I'm glad with the positive attention Magilumiere has been receiving, at least on this site. Hopefully the fact that it's only on Amazon for now won't hinder its success.

I'm living for all this magical girl content, I had watched some Sailor Moon but never really tried the genre much but always wanted to try the classics. So I started with Minky Momo and branched out to Tokyo Mew Mew, PreCure, Gushing, Demon Girl Next Door, and many others. I chose a great time because man are magical girls fans feasting lately, Komugi is best girl and I'm so happy I got to see Wonderful as it airs.

Many may have been a strong word, the main other ones were Cardcaptor Sakura, Witchy PreCure, and Ojamajo Doremi. I absolutely adore Cardcaptor Sakura, but I am not even a quarter of the way through it due to it's length.

As for Gushing, I think it's pretty awesome. The column writers described it pretty well, there are elements that may bother some but if you are down for the premise and okay with a lot of sexual imagery then the writing is great. You fall in love with the characters and they are all pretty compelling. Definitely worth a try at least if you're curious.
