I want to start a discussion about a topic that has been in debate between myself and several other people. The topic of manga or anime, which is better?
I personally take the side of manga, I believe that manga has much more time to flesh out characters and plot that might otherwise be glossed over in an anime. But on the other hand, some things just work so much better as anime. Such as Akira, I don't think theres even a comparison between the manga and the anime, but of course the appeal of Akira was the astounding animation and art. And generally, if the manga comes before the anime adaptation, it's better. But likewise, if the anime is first, then its 90% of the time better than the manga. The Vision of Escaflowne and Rahxephon are perfect examples. Both animes I loved very much, but the manga adaptations didn't do anything for me. |

As I've said each time this has been discussed, for what I read the manga is almost always better because manga is usually able to have more character development, which is key in the series that I like. However there are areas where anime is better, mainly in action scenes, which are hard to follow.
Also many of the anime I've seen based off manga I've also read have been made before the manga was finished and thus often had to go on their own paths plotwise, which is usually inferiour to the original. Oh, and in the Escaflowne manga's defence (though the anime is certainly much better), they aren't really adaptations, just different versions, based off concepts that were kicked around when the anime was being created. |

This has been done numerous times before. My answer hasn't changed.
99% of the time, whatever comes first is better. The biggest exception to this rule is when both are based on something else (i.e. manga and anime both based off a novel or game). |

I also have to go with manga. My main reasons are that manga usually looks better, usually comes first (so it's the real stuff), and doesn't have useless filler episodes. But filler CAN be good in anime, and I really liked One Piece's G8 filler arc as much as I would like any part of the manga. But my main reason for liking manga more is the better drawings and complete story (anime tends to edit alot). I really like the art on paper rather than on a TV or computer screen.
I did like Escaflowne's anime better though, but as marie-antoinette said, the manga is very different. So I guess this isn't really an acception. But probably there is an anime better than it's manga somewhere out there. I'm still pretty un-experienced when it comes to anime/manga, so I wouldn't really know....yet. As for the debate, I think most people might say manga is better, since you are in the manga section But from what I've seen, there are alot of people who prefer anime over manga, and even hate manga. Well, that's cool too, but I enjoy both. |

In general it seems to be:
In manga, the story is better, the characters may be better developed there is more depth. In anime, there are aspects which cannot be shown properly in manga which anime has. Music, movement, colour even, all help to add to the overall experience. I'm currently watching Monster, and have also read the start of the manga. The anime seems very faithful to the manga. (I haven't read any scans of the manga so don't know past volume 3.) But the anime also adds such good detailed animation and excellent music. |

I am also going to say in Manga > Anime, with the exception of anime's that come FIRST, then have manga adaptions.
Something not previously stated here is manga, while not eye-straining as a t.v. and it can be read/enjoyed at your own pace, cannot be enjoyed with friends. Anime however you can put on and watch with others. This is a big factor for me. My manga collection is 3 times my anime collection, and most anime I have bought just because I'm like "hey, watch this, it's good!!" But yes, as you people say, more character development and story in manga, so 9 out of 10 times it pwnz anime. |

I agree, on two counts. As said, character development, and the second, there's more to the storyline and you won't find yourself getting cut off in the middle of the story like manga. The one advantage, however, that anime has over manga is the trend these days where they're making anime first and then have someone adapt it to manga. Last thing being that some anime don't even have manga like this title here. |

In a lot of cases the manga is better but sometimes the nime is better because of action and the voices bring out their personalities.

Posting this in the manga forum won't yield the most unbiased of responses, but it matters not...
Anyways, I'm going with manga. If the anime came first, it's usually better, but as a whole, there are more manga I like than anime I like, and no anime series I've seen is anywhere near as good as the Berserk manga. |

I find the answer is generally that the manga is better than the anime, although there's been some exceptions. But anime does have its appeal. Much like people saying they like a book rather than the movie that was made of it or the comic book that a movie or TV show was based on.

It's hard to say; usually I like them both equally. It's hard with the things where the anime has all been released (in English) but the manga hasn't (i.e. Yu Yu Hakusho).
For the most part, filler episodes only make me annoyed. I don't believe I have seen any filler episodes that have been better than the rest of the series, mostly they are boring and clearly repeats (i.e. Naruto, and, yes, RuroKen). Anime is great because it has the music, the visual, and the voices. It's just easier to pay attention when both your eyes and ears are being bombarded by the story. Still, I have always believed that if a movie is based on a book, the book will be better. (Or whichever comes first.) At any rate, so far I like Manga and Anime equally with the exception of filler episodes. I read and then I watch (or visa versa), and get enjoyment out of both. Neither is really better |

Hmm, most of the people here seem to like the manga better. I'm wondering if you'll get a different response by posting this on the "Anime" forum as opposed to the "Manga" forum. Iirc, from the previous topics that have been basically the same as this, it seems to be the opposite. No surprise though. Try opening the same thread there.
As far as my opinion on this... I have to say I'm one of those sad souls who has barely read any manga. I don't know why since I do like manga whenever I read it. I'll be willing to admit I'm a slow reader though, which may account for some of it (although, I seem to have no problem with subtitles or visual novels/dating sims/renai games now that I think about it, maybe that's not the reason...). Manga takes up far more time than anime for me which I don't particularly like. I do plan to read more manga though... From what I've read, I seem to be agreeing with HitokiriShadow though. |

I suspect that if you posted this same thread in the anime section, you would get similar results after you eliminated the people who just don't like reading. You might get a slightly larger percentage of people who prefer anime, but I suspect a majority would still either generally prefer manga or give the "Whateve came first" response.

I’m afraid can't say much that hasn’t already been said (But I will anyway). Hitorkiri was right, usually it’s just laziness that makes people prefer the anime.
As for me, I tend to like Manga over anime because it tends to go further with the characters and offer more depth. Also, because it does tend to come first, it's how the author intended it, and I like t see how it was originally meant to be. That doesn’t apply to things like...Eureka seven though, where the story and characters were created FOR anime, and therefore work beautifully on T.V. I just feel that a lot of manga gets chopped up kinda awkwardly to fit T.V. in a way that works, and I think a lot is missed. Things like Naruto or One Piece though, that are pretty much the manga word for word I sometimes prefer the anime to. Especially during the fight scenes in like…Ninku or Naruto (Some of them are just stunning. Awesome enough that I’d watch it just for the animation of the fight scenes ^^. Basic formula Shounen is 50-50 for me. I really don’t care either way, and I’ll deal with both if I want a refresher, since they’re not like…At ALL different (I like re-reading/watching things, so it’s not a problem. It’s only a problem if they’re kinda different)) I have a hard time enjoying manga if I read it after watching the anime, but I have no problems the other way around unless I feel it was butchered or too differently executed (I really had issues with the Tsubasa Anime (I thought it was unfortunately directed, different, but not inspired-ly so) but not the xxxHolic). Manga is also cheaper >_>;;;; Some other things though, are equal, like say...The Hagaren or Trigun anime vs manga. They're just so different, and both really good (I can watch and read it, and get a totally different story. I think that's pretty cool. ) My dad on the other hand, who does like to read, prefers to (As he puts it) 'watch his manga' (he likes anime) and I'm not entirely sure why. He's not lazy, but I think he may just not like having to deal with the layouts, as some of them can get confusing if you’re not used to it, or more used to American style comics, like some of the old-guys that crossed over from American comics like, 20 years ago.. |
