Henry will be in a successful franchise come hell or high water.

Granted, given everything I’ve heard about this film is that it may very well be a Dancougar movie just with the robot lions, I have no idea who he’s going to play. Maybe the senior military guy handling the young pilots?

Budget-wise, will this become more of Pacific Rim or Power Rangers?

Cavill has been in a ton of non-franchise stuff. It is just that nearly all of them flop. This makes sense for both parties. Cavill is on the outs with his previous studios Warner Bros and Netflix for reasons, so he went to Amazon to develop a Warhammer 40K series. But expensive streaming series with niche appeal haven't been working lately - Halo, House of the Dragon, Willow, The Acolyte, The Wheel of Time, The Rings of Power, Ahsoka, The Citadel - so Amazon quietly pulled the plug to stick with their cheaper reliable shows about police, ex-military, NSA/CIA types (Jack Ryan, Jack Reacher, etc). But Amazon and Cavill want to keep working together so it makes sense for him to do this while they look for something to replace 40K (Cavill as an Mi6 spy chasing X-Files or Doctor Who type stuff is obvious, which means they'll never do it).

As doing a Power Rangers movie relatively cheaply in 2017 tanked, Amazon/MGM knows that Voltron is going to need a real budget - or the guy who Godzilla Minus One for under $15 million - if it is going to succeed. That means making money overseas to cover that budget. And Voltron is an American franchise that is virtually unknown overseas. Overseas audiences do know Cavill pretty well from his Superman, The Witcher, Mission: Impossible and Enola Holmes roles. If it is an original military mentor type character who gets a lot of lines and an action-heavy part, is close to a bickering Voltron team but dies in a heroic sacrifice, creating the emotional motivation for the team to put aside their differences and combine to form Voltron for the final third act fight, that would be ideal (if cliche). Which, again, means that they are going to use Cavill in an entirely different way.

Well I’m rooting for him. I feel like he’s suffered from a combination of bad luck and bad direction, but he’s lucky enough to not bear the brunt of the blame for it. The cameo in Deadpool and Wolverine got a massive pop at the theater when I went.

I like Henry Cavill and I'm not sure who he could play but I'm down with him being in it. I could also see him playing a villain.

Amazon pulled the plug on the Warhammer 40k series because Cavill wouldn't play ball. Cavill is a very big WH40K fan. He knows the context and feel of that world- dark, dreary, dangerous for most people. Amazon wanted to change the world. They wanted females characters- at least half of the cast. They wanted female Space Marines and Custodes. Anyone familiar with 40K knows those are all MALE units. They wanted gay or handicapped to be played by actual actual gay or handicapped.

Cavill, as executive producer, did not want to make the changes Amazon wanted. As exec prod, he had final say. Amazon will just wait until Cavill's contract is up, and make the changes they to the world, giving us another Wheel of Time or Rings of Power.

I wonder if this will fall in to the same pit as the Live Action Robotech film.

The Robotech film never cast actors. They would get a director, legal stuff and bad scripts would get tossed around, and eventually it would be reset before a day of pre-production.

The director of Voltron on the other hand, has been overseeing set construction and over the weekend claimed the film is roughly six weeks out from shooting beginning. He even shows some of the set crew members while acknowledging that the movie will use original characters.

None of this is true and you should really stop drinking from whatever firehose of bigotry you got it from.
