I know the author claimed elsewhere that she imagined that if Laios were alive in a modern context he would just be an average retail worker. A lot of the humor around the character comes from him cutting this figure as the typical lead protagonist in a fantasy setting, and then his personality not living up to that at all. So it's interesting that the author imagined him as being almost too neuro-typical (though perhaps a bit socially maladroit) as opposed to the more neuro-atypical reading that a lot of fans have of him.

I'm surprised to see Panzer Dragoon as one of Kui-sensei's major inspirations! Very fitting, since Panzer Dragoon was similarly lauded for its worldbuilding in its day.

I'm a bit surprised she answered the question. I remember hearing someone asked this at a recent convention panel and the interpreter refused to translate it or something. Maybe since that was a public setting and it was considered rude.

Gonna need a source for this. Kui-sensei is rather shy; she didn't appear on any panels at AX by choice and instead only had an autograph session. I'm actually not aware of her appearing in public for a panel anywhere.

And of course, all these questions were prepared in advance for review and Kui-sensei/her team had the opportunity to decline any of the questions; none were rejected ahead of the interview.

That's a nice tidbit and really makes sense. All of Laios' ambitions are related to sticking with people and accomplishing personal goals based on his interests up until Falin is in danger. He doesn't see himself as a leader or hero, he is just a stocker that has to stab monsters to get to the items he needs to stock. That's probably why he hadn't considered the possibility of the legend being true and him being a leader with actual power, he doesn't view himself as someone with any chance at power over others and that behavior makes more sense when you consider he views himself as an an average retail worker too.

So, the author doesn't know that she's autistic, ah?

They might be referring to the screening/signing event held early last month in South Korea?

This person on the dunmeshi reddit was there and gave a brief recap, and they also compiled the Q&A's from the event. It seems like the attendees were called one-by-one into a room with Kui/publishing staff, where the actual signing and questions took place.

I've looked for a bit now and unfortunately can't find the tweet I read talking about it. It was over a month ago at this point. Perhaps it was a panel with the anime studio rather than the mangaka herself. Or perhaps it was another anime entirely and I'm misremembering. I just recall discussion of an awkward incident at a Q&A panel involving the subject and it leading to a discussion on how the issue is represented in Japan in general.

Thank you for the link, it adds a lot of context. The summary provided says that the individual asked "If Laios has a mental disorder?" They say it was phrased in Korean insensitively and that's probably why the question was rejected.

They might have meant to ask if Laios is autistic, but that's the wrong way to ask for more than one reason and I'm not surprised it was rejected.

For transparency, there's a reason my questions are worded how they are in the interview, and that's in some part because if you want to talk to creatives in this industry about sensitive subjects, you have to ask in a particular manner. Readers are very used to American-style interviews, which can be very forthright or confrontational.
