A couple random notes and observations about this:

  • The first JP release of the Muv-Luv trilogy for Switch was in an expensive “20th Odyssey Box” back in March. eShop versions followed in April, and a standard edition physical release came out last week. Since all of these included the EN translation, we’ve kind of been wondering when/if they were going to get around to a western release.
  • The collector’s box also contains download codes for the spin-off Muv-Luv Unlimited: The Day After, episodes 00-03 and so far, that’s the only way to get those games for Switch; they haven’t been made available on the eShop or as a standard physical edition.
  • TDA is a bit strange as a bonus add-on to the main trilogy, as it takes place in the abortive Unlimited timeline. The direct spin-offs photonflowers and photonmelodies, which feature the cast of the main trilogy, would arguably have made more sense. Chances are the difference is that TDA uses the new port-friendly engine, while the photons are currently trapped as PC-only (setting aside their original PS3 release).
  • Speaking of ports, the original trilogy was supposed to come out on mobile in 2022, and even did a beta test, but the mobile release was quietly abandoned after that. As a result, this technically means the 2015 Kickstarter has never been completely fulfilled, since they’ve never shipped a promised Android version that some backers paid for.
  • Looking ahead, Total Eclipse uses the new engine, and the upcoming crowd-funded Kimi ga Nozomu Eien / Rumbling Hearts remaster probably will as well, so Switch ports for those remain at least technically possible, though all we know for now is that they’re PC-only.
